Visual art festivals in Turkey: A calendar for cinema and theatre lovers for 2018-2019 season

SEPTEMBER 2018 - Istanbul Design Biennial - Organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial will be held from Sept. 22 to Nov. 4, 2018. The title of this year’s biennial is “A School of Schools.” The Istanbul Design Biennial aims to bring together a diverse cross section of design ideas once every two years, exploring a wide range of fields concerning design. Istanbul uses the city itself for design projects. This year’s title also aims to create a set of dynamic learning formats encouraging creative production, sustainable collaboration and social connection, engaging with multigenerational, transdisciplinary practitioners from Turkey and abroad.
İzmir International Fair - The İzmir International Fair is the first and most comprehensive trade fair of Turkey. The fair has a specific theme every year. This year, the festival is held between Sept. 7 and Sept. 17. During the fair, theater plays and musical performances, concerts, cinema screenings, jazz concerts, street shows, interviews, exhibitions, workshops, cinema workshops, yoga, zumba and art street events attract the international audience. Istanbul Comics & Art Festival - Istanbul Comics and Art Festival is a multi-disciplinary open air art festival, which offers a creative experience in the field of the urban arts, public space installations, comics, illustration stores and exhibitions, workshops, seminars and music. The festival takes place in Club Quarties, starting from Sept. 6 to Sept. 9.
Selçuk Efes Culture and Art Festival - In the Selçuk Ephesus Festival, many artists come together in order to celebrate the independence day of the UNESCO city Ephesus. Each year, music, fun, culture and dance shows are organized as well as playgrounds for the children, workshops and the food courts. This year, the festival is organized from the Sept. 6 to Sept. 8.
OCTOBER 2018 - October Film Fest (İKSV) - Tickets for the festival will begin to be sold on Sept. 23. One of the most prestigious film festivals in Turkey, the festival is full of events such as the premieres of the Turkish films and the first projections of internationally acclaimed films. Movies that will be shown this year are: The Killing of the Sacred Deer, The Square, Loveless, Happy End, Un Beau Soleil Intérieur, 120 Beats Per Minute, Housewife, Best-Motion Oscar winner The Shape of Water, Call Me By Your Name, Fatih Akın’s In the Fade, and You Were Never Really Here.
FEBRUARY 2019 - !f Istanbul AFM International Independent Film Festival The 10th !f Istanbul AFM International Independent Film Festival is a film festival held in Istanbul, Turkey. The festival is also organized in Ankara and İzmir in March. Many Turkish movies premiere during the festival, showing the works of emerging innovative directors. Last year, !f Istanbul’s Gala section featured the Turkey premieres of award-winning titles from Sundance to Venice, Toronto to Cannes and festivals around the world that have been widely acclaimed. “Phantom Thread,” The Florida Project,” “How to Talk to Girls at Parties,” “Human Flow,” “I am Not a Witch” and “Film Stars Don’t Die” were seen for the first time at !f in Turkey.
APRIL 2019 - International Istanbul Film Festival - The Istanbul International Film Festival (Turkish: Uluslararası İstanbul Film Festivali) is the first and oldest international film festival in Turkey, organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts. It is held every year in April in movie theaters in Istanbul, Turkey. As mentioned in its regulations, the festival aims to encourage the development of cinema in Turkey and to promote films of quality in the Turkish cinema market.
MAY 2019 - International Amateur Theaters Festival (Denizli) - The festival has been held since 1984, attended by amateur theater groups from all over Turkey and the world. Applications from amateur theater groups are assessed by the selection committee determined by the municipality of Denizli. Each year, the Denizli municipality meets their demand for food and accommodation throughout the festival. Their transportation expenses are also paid by the Denizli municipality, beginning from the moment they land in Turkey to when they arrive in the city.
Robert College Fine Arts Festival (Istanbul)- Robert College is a private five-year high school operating under the Education Ministry. Every year of education is conducted in English. Students are accepted after eighth grade based on their scores in a national exam. Robert College has been a well-respected leader of education in Turkey for over 150 years. Organized by the Robert College annually since 1982, the Fine Arts Festival is the largest secondary school festival in Turkey. Fine Arts Festival is a big event in which many student groups can perform on stage. There are various art exhibitions and dance shows that take place in the festival. More than 2,000 people attend the festival each year.
Yunus Emre Culture and Art Week (Eskişehir) - In Sarıköy, east of Eskişehir, lies the grave of Yunus Emre. Yunus Emre is one of the most important poets in Turkish folk literature. Yunus Emre believed the path to unity was through love. In order to commemorate his poems and his philosophy, the festival in his name is organized aiming for a grand celebration of love and harmony in the first week of May each year.
International Istanbul Theatre Festival - The festival is one of Turkey’s most popular events, including several international theaters, dance groups and workshops. In recent years, many famous artists met with audiences in Istanbul, thanks to events organized by the festival. For example, John Malkovich’s opera play titled The Infernal Comedy was a part of the festival in 2017. Last year, the host venues were: Harbiye Muhsin Ertuğrul Stage, Caddebostan Culture Center, Haldun Taner Stage, Lütfi Kırdar International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Üsküdar Tekel Stage and Theatre Pera.
JUNE 2019 - Organized by TOBAV (State Theater, Opera and Ballet Employees Foundation) in collaboration with the Alaçatı Municipality, Alaçatı International Theatre Festival for Children & Youth invites groups with the slogan of “All Alaçatı is a theater stage.” One of the most basic aims of the festival is to provide knowledge and experience an exchange between “young” people who have different social and cultural points of view. The festival, which three native and three foreign groups will join, will be symbol of friendship. Accommodation and food are provided by the Alaçati Municipality. Each year, participation proposals end during the month of April.
Ankara Flying Broom Women Film Festival - The Flying Broom International Women’s Film Festival is an annual Ankara-based film festival celebrating women’s contributions to filmmaking. Established in 1997, the festival aims to raise awareness and fight for human rights of women, as well as women’s empowerment in the cinema sector and throughout Turkey. It is the only women’s film festival in the world to give out the Fipresci Award.
International Art Camp in Cappadocia - Artists specializing in various mediums gather here for eight days and produce pieces of art that are often inspired by the picturesque surroundings of this region. The event is a perfect opportunity for artists to find new inspiration as well as to meet other artists to share their work and exchange artistic views.
