Turkish town ‘stinks’ after livestock ship drops anchor
The people of Samsun have complained to the media about a distinct odor in Turkey’s Black Sea town since the arrival of a large ship transporting livestock. Here is the story in photos...
According to local media reports on June 7, the stench spread from the port into the city. Its source is Zad Elkhir, a Panama-flagged livestock carrier that has brought 4,650 cattle.
“Do they not clean the ship at all? It becomes worse when the wind blows toward Samsun over this ship. We cannot even open our windows,” a citizen reportedly said.
“It stinks. We had first thought the smell originated from the touristic horse coaches,” a tourist said.
The good news for Samsun locals is the ship is scheduled to leave the town on June 8 and the livestock will be distributed in Samsun and the Central Anatolian province of Kırşehir.
