The busts of leading figures in Turkish history who were born in Isparta have been on display at the Martyrs’ Park in the Demirköprü neighborhood since 2013.
According to local media reports, neighborhood residents noticed that nine of the busts were gone, including those depicting Muhsin Ertuğrul, one of the founders of modern Turkish theater, and Osman Hamdi, the founder of modern Turkish museums and archeology.
For an unexplained reason, the thieves did not take away the bust of Osman Hamdi’s younger brother, Halil Ethem Eldem, who was another member of the late Ottoman intelligentsia.
In another area of the park, there are also statues of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and Süleyman Demirel, another former Turkish president, and both statues were untouched.
“We have filed a criminal complaint with the police. We will make new busts for the same figures if the stolen ones cannot be found,” municipality official Ümit Kaçar reportedly said.
