Main opposition candidate vows to retire if Erdoğan wins again
Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) presidential candidate Muharrem İnce vowed late June 8 to retire from politics if President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wins the June 24 election. “But I have one condition: Erdoğan would face me on a TV debate before the elections,” İnce added. Tens of thousands of İnce supporters attended the rally in Istanbul’s Asian district of Kadıköy late June 8, which is considered a CHP stronghold.
For CHP’s “night rally,” İnce walked from Kadıköy’s Şaşkınbakkal neighborhood to Göztepe Park via Istanbul’s famous Bağdat Avenue. He took the stage on his bus after he arrived.
“People are still pouring in. I can’t see the end of the avenue. The people of Kadıköy, you have started a big change and I expect you to do the same on June 24,” İnce addressed the crowd.
The CHP candidate reminded that Erdoğan had called him to quit politics if İnce loses the upcoming election. “I promise that I will,” İnce said, before putting forward his pre-condition of a TV debate with Erdoğan.
“You can pick the broadcaster, the host of the program and a date for it. You can also take your advisors and your teleprompter with you. Just face me,” İnce challenged Erdoğan.
“Turkey has big problems and big problems cannot be solved by exhausted men. We aspire to be Turkey’s fresh blood,” he added, vowing to incentivize production and stop what he described as “waste and corruption.”
İnce also invited the crowd to CHP’s day-time Istanbul rally scheduled for June 23. “I want to see two million people there,” he said.
