‘Little Venice’ of Turkey under blanket of snow
‘Little Venice’ of Turkey under blanket of snow
The Gölyazı neighborhood of Turkey’s northwestern province of Bursa has been covered in snow, presenting picturesque scenes for ones who fancy the winter season.
With a history dating back some 2,600 years, Gölyazı was pointed by the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) as one of the 30 most beautiful towns in Europe.
The town center, a small peninsula surrounded by the waters of Lake Uluabat, resembles the historic Italian city of Venice especially when the rising waters reach the doors of the buildings on rainy days.
Tourists have been flocking to the town during spring and summer in recent years.
Cruises with fisher boats and Ottoman-style imperial caïques are available during the winter as well.
“Those who visit in the winter come across a quite different sight here,” Atilla Yılmaz, chair of Gölyazı’s tourism cooperative, told Anadolu Agency on Jan. 9.
“Some areas on which visitors walk and park their cars in the summer have been under waters in winter time,” he added.
Archaeological excavations to unearth the Temple of Apollonia in Gölyazı have been ongoing since 2016, with joint efforts of the Nilüfer Municipality and the Uludağ University.
