In Edirne near Turkey's border with Greece, houses and cars were submerged in downpours.
This was the heaviest rainfall that the province has received in a day since the year 1953. At least one person was killed after the heavy rain caused flash floods, authorities said.
In Muğla's touristic district of Bodrum, heavy rains were accompanied by tornadoes.
Edirne received a total of 130 kilograms of rainfall per square meters in just six hours.
The authorities provided food to the people who could not leave their buildings because floodwaters blocked the entrances. Those stranded in their apartments also had heating problems as they had no electricity and their gas supplies were cut off.
Heavy rain not only hit the city center but also affected the villages in the province.
Flash floods submerged all the houses in the Oğulpaşa village of the Havsa district where a 78-year-old man lost his life in because of flood.
Sewage trucks belonging to the Municipality of Edirne worked around the clock to drain the water from the submerged houses. The Municipality of Trakya also dispatched units from its sewage and waterworks department to Edirne to help with the rescue efforts.
Some 100 residential buildings were left without power in the Kocasinan neighborhood of Edirne.
Strong wind and rain also affected life in Istanbul, the country’s largest city.
The Istanbul Municipality’s Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) made a warning for locals against icing and frost on the roads.
Meanwhile ferry service between the northwestern province of Çanakkale and the islands of Gökçeada and Bozcaada off the coast of Çanakkale were cancelled due to bad weather.
