Olive oil produced from the crops of one of the world’s oldest trees was sold for a high price at an auction held on Nov. 17 in Turkey’s Aegean province of İzmir.
Some 152 bottles of olive oil in 21 classifications were sold for 47,750 Turkish Liras ($8,955), said Tunç Soyer, the mayor of İzmir’s Seferihisar district.
The most expensive piece was bought by Salih Değerli, a local businessman, for 30,000 liras ($5,620) at the auction held at the theater in the ancient city of Teos.
The half liter of olive oil was produced from the crops of the 1,800-year-old tree called Umay Nine (Granny Umay), named after the goddess of fertility in Turkic mythology.
All bottles of olive oil produced from trees no younger than 500 years old were sold to attendees including Argyro Papoulia, the Consul General of Greece in İzmir.
Teos was one of the 12 cities that formed the Ionian League in the seventh century B.C.
“The city, which is known as the city of artists, also houses trees thousands of years old. We have been excited to meet the two miracles with you,” Soyer said.
All the income from the auction will be granted to students in the district, he added.
The Seferihisar Municipality, one of the members of the international Cittaslow movement, began the program three years ago to produce olive oil from around 200 historic trees and to sell them at auctions.
The program has been carried out within the scope of the Agriculture Fest in the district.
