Herd of Anatolian Chamois caught on camera in Turkey’s east
Mountaineers in the eastern Turkish province of Tunceli have captured a rare footage of a large herd of Anatolian Chamois. Click through for the story in photos...
Rupicapra rupicapra asiatica, as it is known scientifically, is the only subspecies of chamois or the “hooked-horned mountain goats.”
The species was categorized as “data deficient” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature due to vagueness in its population size, distribution and limited number of studies in Turkey.
Eight mountaineers from Munzur Adrenaline and Nature Sports Club (MADOSK) and Zirve (Summit) Mountaineering and Nature Sports Club climbed the Munzur Mountain in Tunceli this week.
According to local media reports, the mountaineers spotted a large herd of Anatolian Chamois near the 3,300-meter summit of the mountain which they climbed in 4.5 hours.
Mountaineer Özgür Aydoğdu took the rare photos of the herd.
The group also named two previously uncharted summits near the summit of the Munzur Mountain as “Chamios 1” and “Chamios 2,” the reports added.
Hunting chamois is illegal in Turkey, stipulating fines of 15,000 Turkish Liras for each poached animal.
