Ottoman family to sue wine company

BURSA - Anatolia News Agency
Descendents of the Ottoman Empire’s royal family have vowed legal action after discovering that a wine company was using the names of sultans for its product.

”Our ancestors ruled the world for some 700 years. It makes us very sad to see the name of our grandfathers on wine bottles. I want the government to make a law regarding the protection of the 36 sultans,” Abdülhamid Kayıhan Osmanoğlu said during a visit to the northwestern province of Bursa for a press conference.

The Ottoman sultans are more than just distant figures from yesteryear, said Osmanoğlu. “We are just their relatives with the same blood. We will take legal measures to prevent it.”

Yavuz Sultan Selim, Süleyman the Magnificent and Sultan Murad III are some of the Ottoman rulers whose names are being used as the names of wines by the beverage company.
