One soldier killed in PKK attack in Turkey’s southeast

One soldier was killed on May 4 in an outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) attack in the Varto district of the eastern province of Muş.

PKK militants ambushed gendarmerie forces that had arrived in the district’s Kayalıkale village to apprehend a suspect, wounding three soldiers.

The wounded soldiers were transferred to hospital but one later succumbed to their injuries.

An aerial-supported operation has begun in the region to apprehend the PKK militants responsible for the attack.

Meanwhile, thirteen PKK militants were killed on May 3 in security operations in Turkey’s southeastern Hakkari, Mardin and Şırnak provinces, according to the military.

The Turkish general staff said on May 4 that 10 PKK militants were killed in the Çukurca district of Hakkari.        
Another operation in the Nusaybin district of Mardin province saw one PKK militant killed, bringing the total number of dead in the district to 325.        

Two PKK militants were also killed in Şırnak, bringing the number of killed there to 299.        

Several weapons were also seized during the operations, the statement added.
