German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was "optimistic", but could not be certain that the "European project" would work, in a video interview published on Wednesday.

"We have of course not yet organised the European project in such a way that we can be sure it will work, work well. That means we need to keep working on this. We have much to do, but I am optimistic that we will succeed," she said.

Speaking in an interview broadcast on the website of her conservative CDU party, Merkel added Germany could only do well economically when its European partners are prospering.

"Therefore we are working so hard to overcome the debt crisis and the competitiveness crisis," she said.

Merkel added that Germans largely shared the "fundamental principles" that she operated under, namely "no solidarity without corresponding effort and no guarantees without control".

"This encourages me to continue with these principles when we are trying to shape the future of Europe," said the chancellor.

Recent polls have shown that Merkel remains one of Germany's most popular politicians and that the German people broadly approve of her crisis-fighting strategy.

Merkel said her time living under a dictatorship in the former communist East Germany continued to inspire her.

"The experience of freedom drives me. I lived for several years in East Germany. I know what it means when one cannot travel freely, speak one's mind freely," she said.

"I think it is great that we surmounted the Cold War, that we no longer have fear of war in Europe and that we can try to convince others of our values in the European community," she said.

of course the EU will not work because it is un democratic and is run by power mad people who are not elected and could not care less about the people. Just look at the reaction of the people of greece and spain to the dictate of the EU,it is being surpressed by the police just like in russia or in a south americian dictatorship! If the people could vote to get out of the EU they would but the EU dictators and Banksters would allow that. The EU will fail!!!

Dorus - you are quite right in all you say: But the difference between the USA and a 'USE' is that the latter would comprise of cultures, civilisations with individual languages that have developed over many centuries where as the USA pretty much came off a clean sheet of paper - aboriginal's notwithstanding. Federalisation is the only way that a 'USE' would work and the very reason that it will never do so!

the european experiment seem to have failed. It tried unsuccessfully to resemble USA but it has become a caricature of that. It is obvious that european countries don't want to be federalized, however that would be the only way of success...

And far from desired too especially under that which is tantamount to a German dominated, undemocratic amalgam of member states. We cannot wait here in the UK for a long overdue referendum on continued membership and/or renegotiated terms. Impossible for sure and completely unwanted by many!

It hasn't worked so far so why should it work in the future, unless the whole of Europe becomes one dictatorship?

MS Angela Merkel, a courageous lady. It is a daunting task, to get tangled with with all those member countries which have different languages, different traditions, different cultures and animosities present in between some nationalities. Cohesively to bring them together in harmony, seems like a "mission impossible".
