New uniforms of THY are designed by Dilek Hanifi, Turkish designer.

The new uniforms of Turkish Airlines (THY) hosts and hostesses have raised eyebrows in Turkey after the photos of the new designs have leaked to Twitter. The public has found the new clothing very conservative, stirring controversy on social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter. The new outfits, which were created by famous Turkish designer Dilek Hanif, have been first published on Twitter and later on spread by Facebook.

Hanif told the daily Hürriyet that the uniforms have not been fully completed and the design process is still ongoing. Lots of people have shared the photos and criticized the designs, saying that they are far too conservative.

The most-criticized parts of the uniforms are the hats. Some have claimed the hats – along with the whole outfit – are reminiscent of costumes in the Ottoman-era TV serial “The Magnificent Century” (Muhteşem Yüzyıl). Hanif said the photos are only sample models and not the real designs. Turkish airlines general manager Temel Kotil has said he has not seen the uniforms and cannot criticize them, but added that whatever THY does, it does with beauty.

THY representatives have responded to the Twitter reactions, saying the uniform designs have not been finalized yet.

Daily Habertürk published comments from other Turkish designers, such as the famous Yıldırım Mayruk, who said Dilek Hanif’s designs are nothing but a “joke.”

Designer Vural Gökçaylı said the clothes do not reflect Turkey. “The clothes look like they belong to Kuwait or Saudi Arabian Airlines. However, they should reflect Turkey and Turkey is not this.”

Great uniform, great airline, great nation. Enough said. Stop trashing the Otterman heratige. Ask the Italians if they are ashamed of the Roman Empire, ask the British if they are ashamed of the British Empire? You will get a resounding no. They are proud of their history, as Turks should be of theirs.

I am not a Turk but an expat who has lived for a number of years in turkey. I believe the secular agenda can only be challenged by the lack of performance delivery by the secular parties. The debate on uniform design is one that is futile as clothes have never been a marker of progress. It is important for the turkish nation to not completely trash the Ottoman Empire as there is much to be learned from it and prevent mistakes from recurring with considered debate

If Turkish Airlies is supposed to be the flagship for Turkey, all these uniforms say is that Turkey could do with a good fashion design school which teaches cutting.I can't see the stewardesses climbing down into the sea on a ladder in this lot. Back to the drawing board I think as these uniforms fail from every possible angle and while you are at it sack the peson who thought that these should be displayed.

they're not that bad - they are inoffensive and innocuous enough. my concern would be the loose fit - i know, myself, i'm always catching my shirt or my pants pocket on buttons, levers, handles, etc, and that's just around the house or a shop. i would be worried about loose-fitted clothing in the tight confines of an airplane where accidently pulling the wrong lever could do more damage than sending all my rubbermaid containers to the floor!

This is still the most popular article apparently .. I guess no one reads, everyone just looks at the single picture above .. they have more designs this is just one of them, HDN has many other pictures, and honestly I was horrified at first but there are a few very good ones among them. Click on the picture under the main picture (the one that says, Turkish airlines alternative uniforms)

I prefer my beer served to me by a woman wearing a burkha, but to each his own.

These uniforms are outdated and don't respresent the image of a modern Turkey. Besides they are very ugly.

The uniforms look like the modern Ottoman dress with fez-like hat and long coat. This is not conservative just poor design. Why not have a design without the hat - that can hit the cabin's ceiling - and a skrit that is midlength. PanAm hostesses wore hats in the 1950s and in 1960s but at that time that was the style. The design is similar to as if the United Airlines had design resembling the Pilgrims dress of 1650s. Simple, easy to wear, easy to launder, and comfortable to wear are best..

Anyone still reading this, look at the pictures also on HDN for ALL designs Honestly there are a few among that that look very good, better than anything I've seen at any airline eve, but these are still horrible though haha
