Turkish police detained around 20 students on Wednesday after they pelted Israel's ambassador with eggs to protest the Jewish state's treatment of Palestinians, forcing him to cancel a university visit.

The protest took place outside the university in the Black Sea port of Trabzon as Ambassador Gabby Levy arrived in his car, Anatolia news agency reported.

"Israel is a murderer," television footage showed the students shouting.

The ambassador left without getting out of his vehicle and police detained the group of around 20 students who defied orders to disperse, Anatolia said.

Levy was already embarrassed Tuesday in nearby Rize, where local Mayor Halil Bakirci condemned Israel's "policies of expansion and occupation" and said that self-defense should not involve "killing children."

Referring to Israelis visiting Turkey's Black Sea region, he also told Levy that "due to Israel's policies, we are worried that something undesirable may happen to those tourists and we do our best so that it does not."

Israel's relations with Turkey, its main regional ally, took a downturn in January when Ankara launched an unprecedented barrage of criticism of the Jewish state over its devastating war on the Gaza Strip.

Last month Turkey excluded Israel from joint military drills and said that bilateral ties would continue to suffer unless Israel ends "the humanitarian tragedy" in Gaza and revives peace talks with the Palestinians.

The Palestinian cause enjoys widespread support in both Islamist and leftist circles in Turkey.

@baran you are absurd.. in the history of the world there has never been such a country as "kurdistan" Israel is just over 60 years old and before then there was a Palestine, and also who are you to tell people what they should or should not be worrying about? isn't that their decision?

I don't comprehend the point pro-Israeli stooges try to pass through to the rest of us as they invariably bring up the Armenian 'Genocide' as some justification for their actions, preposterous!

Guest - R. (2009-11-06 01:17:32) :

I'm sorry, but what is this: ''The Palestinian cause enjoys widespread support in both Islamist and leftist circles in Turkey.''? I think it enjoys widespread support in leftist as well as in right-wing circles, whether it is Islamist or not.

@ Doyle.. the wisest words spoken on this forum yet. i thank you. even though you are a pom, you are a turk at heart. To the armenian diaspora. it is our generation with the tools at hand like the internet for us to be informed of the inhumane horrors of war. we can perpetuate wars through our hatred of each other or we can save our children of the fate both your forefathers and mine experienced in the past.

Guest - M (2009-11-05 15:56:16) :

But meanwhile, the Sudanese president is welcome to visit Turkey. Where are the protests? ...Well done people, good work.

Guest - Doyle (2009-11-05 15:46:50) :

As an old soldier who loves Turkey and comes almost every. I say to you, don't hate so much. Many things go on in this world that you and I never get to see. There is enough blame to go around for us all. I can tell you this, that when someone is shooting at you, the instint to live sets in.

Guest - Truth (2009-11-05 15:29:17) :

To baran. excelent atempt at trying to twist the point and again make us look like we lie. yes you are correct not every citizen of isreal is jewish. then again no one said they were. just as no one ever said that all turkish citizens are muslim. also why would they protest the fact that the government is reaching out to the kurds and welcoming them back down from the mountains of N iraq, without their guns of coarse. and by the way if you think this government has been brutal to the kurds then you have been living in fantasy land. please stick to relevant facts. it only shows your prejudices that you habor toward turkey if you distort the truth

A lot of people like to build up a myth that they are mistreated by the west. But, ave you ever thought about that in many Islamic countries, Muslims (i.e. the own population of the country) is treated much worse than the Muslims living in the west. Just an example: In Iran, Ayatollah Sayed Hossein Kazemeyni Boroujerdi, a 50-year-old Shia cleric, is currently imprisoned in Yazd Prison in central Iran for his peaceful religious opinions. Amnesty International considers him to be a prisoner of conscience. In the west clerics are not imprissoned for religious opinions. Why are there no demonstrations against Muslims being mistreated when it is done in the name of Islam (like the regime in Iran)?

How strange! These Turkish students appear to have nothing to say about their government's brutal treatment of the Kurds! Over three thousand Kurdish villages destroyed, over two million Kurds forcibly resettled to the slums of big cities, bans & restrictions on Kurdish language and cultural practices, the ridiculous claim that Turkey's citizens are all Turks! Is Israel's every citizen Jewish? .....These students' concern for the dispossessed Palestinians is much appreciated, but shouldn' they clean up their own backyard first? Shoudn't they oppose as fiercely to the occupation of Kurdistan as to the occupation of Palestine?

I want to cry when I remember Palestinian Children was crying and dying and their parents were killed by Israil. They were washed with their blood. So I don't want any Israel people in my country. I am proud these studens.

Quite ironical ! Turkey the present Human Right Champion welcomes Omar-Al Bashir ! Over 400,000 Muslims killed in Sudan and not a single word from Erdogan ! Maybe someone can explain why according to Turkey prime minister Shimon Peres deserve to be called a killer and Bashir is entitled to a red carpet ? My best advise for all Jews around the world: Don't go to Turkey !!!!

Guest - Vargmen (2009-11-05 10:19:50) :

I think this is another expression of how Muslims tend to be more upset by violence against Muslims if it is conducted by non-muslims. We can see for example that there were hardly any demonstrations against Sadam Hussein. Neither can we rarely read in the newspapers that almot all people (Muslims) killed in Iraq, are killed by Muslims. We rarely saw any protests against the enormous curruption in Palestine (we all saw the internal fights for Arafats fortune and his luxury life), which killed more people than the Israelis. Neither does anyone protests against Hamas hiding among civilians when attacked by Israel. Why are these things never mentioned? I think if we should stop the violence, we have to see the problems in a more biased way, not only from our own perspective, and only recognize our own suffering and blaming "the other" for everything.

@ 7Hills. i never said it was a excuse, if u read my comment i specificaly said thats no excuse. To Adam. you dont think that the isrealis have lost the support of not only the turks but all the people of the world. look around and take a reality check. if u believe that the university has a total of 20 students then u r kidding urself. i am amazed that out of a regional university which would have no less than 1000 students there were only 20 radicals who chose such a violent and dangerous method of protest. but u guys missed my point. i believe it was staged. the ambassodor knowing very well that regions mentality felt this would make for great consumption in isreal and perpetuate the belief within isreal that they r being discriminated and vicimised by the world. there by gaining the support of isrealis for their next foray into war crimes.

Guest - Adam (2009-11-04 22:57:39) :

Whether or not both governments can make peace, Turkey has now lost the support of Israeli and Jewish people worldwide. This is a shame for Turkey.

Guest - Erden (2009-11-04 21:55:07) :

7 Hills, you talk about civilized, tell me how civilized Israel is and was whilst killing palestinian children woman and men in cold blood, how "civilized" the I"D"F was whilst wearing t-shirts with a picture of a pregnant palestinian in a cross hair with the heading "1 shot 2 kills" how dare you talk about civilized behavior?

Guest - Free Palestine (2009-11-04 20:57:53) :

I congratulate those brave students for taking on the war criminals. This is how they should be welcomed everywhere they go, until they stop murdering Arabs and stealing Arab land

Guest - 7Hills (2009-11-04 20:52:34) :

Yes maybe they are some of Turkey's "most nationalistic" people, but that is no excuse because Turks were not being killed by the Jews in that war. So that is a poor excuse for this type of uncivilized behavior. The Turks always have a way of making excuses for their bad behavior and uncivilized ways. You would think that at an educational institution there would be more civilized behavior and a peaceful demonstration would have been much better and maybe a much better image for the Turks. As always, making themselves look bad. Is this something to be proud of? I don't think so.

Guest - Guest (2009-11-04 19:50:03) :

every citizen has the right to protest.

Guest - Kaya (2009-11-04 19:48:47) :

Its hard to believe academics can be so ignorant sometimes.

Guest - BettiMc (2009-11-04 18:33:10) :

Killings should not involve any civilians anywhere. However, educated university students missed their chance to talk with Israeli officer in civilized manner. Young generation in Turkey should study history and see what kind of relationship Turkey had with Arab world throughout the history...

Guest - Truth (2009-11-04 17:02:18) :

at such a sensitive time in isreal turkey relations you would think that he would have been advised that the black sea people are amoung turkeys most nationalistic people, and whatever business he has in that region would have been delegated to not so high an official. i carnt help thinking. broadcasting this on prime time news in isreal will benefit Avigdor Lieberman. still, no excuse for the behavior of those students.
