Turkish professor receives Pushkin Prize
Turkish Professor Hayrettin Ývgin, 66, has won the Pushkin Prize for literary excellence from the Institute of Russian Literature, or Pushkin House, of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Ývgin, who has written 44 books and more than 2,000 articles on literature and folklore, was honored for his novel “Manas” and his overall contributions to world literature.
The author said he received the award based on the recommendations of five countries and the work done by Azerbaijani Professor Elçin Ýskenderzade. “This is a significant award but … it’s not known much in Turkey,” he said. “I am touched and honored by the prize. I am excited to be the first Turk to receive this award.”
A graduate of the Gazi University Faculty of Literature, Ývgin’s works and articles have been translated into the Turkic languages as well as Chinese, Romanian, Italian, French, German, English and Russian. He has received academic memberships, honorary doctorates and professorships from universities and scientific academies around the world.
Ývgin will receive the prize at a ceremony to be held in Moscow in December.
