Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has pushed back his planned visit to Turkey, Turkish aviation officials said on Sunday, adding that the controversial leader canceled his Sunday flight without any explanation.
It was not clear whether al-Bashir will come to Turkey on Monday or Tuesday for a summit of Islamic nations, the officials added, according to a report by the Doğan news agency.
The statement came hours after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan defended al-Bashir’s visit by saying, “A Muslim can never commit genocide.”
“Those world leaders who criticize us, have they ever visited Darfur? Their information is solely based on what the rapporteurs are reporting. These kinds of moves will not contribute to world peace,” Erdoğan said Sunday in an address to party members.
“It’s not possible for a Muslim to commit genocide,” he said. “That’s why we are comfortable [with the visit of al-Bashir].”
The International Criminal Court, or ICC, has issued an arrest warrant for al-Bashir, citing his alleged role in the atrocities perpetrated in the Darfur region of Sudan, which claimed the lives of more than 300,000 people. Turkey is among the few countries to have not yet ratified the Rome Statute, which requires compliance with ICC rulings.
The European Union asked Turkey on Friday to align its policy on the al-Bashir issue with that of Brussels and indirectly demanded the cancellation of the visit for the sake of the ongoing membership talks. In the meantime, international human rights organizations urged Turkey to arrest al-Bashir if he arrives in Istanbul.
“We are aware of the fact that there are those who want to corner Turkey through al-Bashir’s visit. These people should know well our sensitivities about human rights violations. I went to Darfur myself. I want to ask: How many of these worlds leaders paid a visit to Sudan, to Darfur? I went there to see it with my own eyes,” Erdoğan said. Erdoğan added that he did not observe that genocide was being committed during his Darfur visit.
Al-Raed, a Sudanese newspaper widely considered an outlet for the National Congress Party, or NCP, said al-Bashir would fly from Egypt to Turkey on Monday, after concluding his participation in the fourth Forum of China-Africa Cooperation. The paper reported that the president was expected to arrive in Istanbul late Monday afternoon.
The European Union reiterated its position on al-Bashir to Turkey through a diplomatic note, which asked the Turkish government to align its policies with that of the 27-member bloc. Turkey responded harshly to the EU, saying al-Bashir was not arriving in Istanbul for a bilateral visit and that the invitation was made by the OIC.
According to diplomatic sources, there was an active diplomatic discussion in Ankara, Brussels and Washington over the weekend concerning al-Bashir’s visit. While Brussels and Washington pressed Turkey to cancel the visit, Ankara tried to keep a lid on reactions from the EU and the United States.
U.S. State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said, “It was really up to the government of Turkey” whether to allow the indicted president to attend a meeting of the OIC. Kelly also said Washington’s purpose was not to criticize Turkey but that it would expect Turkey to raise “Darfur issues” if it holds meetings with al-Bashir. But like Turkey, the United States also has yet to sign the Rome Statute.

truth: the historicity of the holocaust is irrefutable, as is the fallenness of human nature. of course the jews could could commit crimes against humanity, because they themselves are human and hence fallen. we have an amazing blindspot when dealing with ourselves cum zoom lens for the sins of others. it's not a matter of sinless we justly pointing at red-handed others; we should all take note, show appropriate outrage, demand and execute justice - always realising that we ourselves are just as capable of doing worse than that done by the accused...and, after proper historical reflection, realise that we have.

this is unaceptable, bashir should be arrested just as the leaders of isreal durring the gazza war should be arrested and taken to the haig on charges of war crimes and blatant contravention of the geneva convention and crimes against humanity. i am starting to question the historic acurasy of the holocast as i believe that a people who were exposed to such horific cimes durring WW2 for 5 years, could not possibly commit such crimes against another for 50 years. im just saying as i see it

My first reaction was, “What better place for a genocidal state leader to go than Turkey to learn how to avoid paying the price of the crime?" Since the most obvious & egregious example, the Armenian Genocide, has already been addressed, I'll just move on to the Ibos of Biafra at the hands of the Nigerian governement, the people of East timor at the hands of the Indonesian government, and back to Turkey with the Kurds in the 1920s & 1930s, and later for the Ataturk dam, what the government did certainly bordered on genocide, if not fully fitting the description. You might notice that these countries are all majority Moslem. I must wonder, is there a resurgence in opium production that Turkey used to be famous for, and is Erdogan using a significant portion of it?

Shame on u Mr Erdogan , shame on u. After your childish Darfur desaster and your ingatioation to Iran and your hostile policy against Israel u made now this horrible and demolishing statement. Mr Erdogan and his AKP shows now their real face: they are islamistic and they try to change Turkey to a medieval society like the arab countries are. Secularism & a pro western & israel policy seems not anymore in the focus. Terrorstates like Syria, Iran & Sudan are the new friends of Turkey ? My beloved Turkey, where are u going. I am in a deep concern about the future, the problem is that the AKP voters are mostly religous and have antiwestern and antiisrael attitudes so that thy next elections will not solve the AKP & Erdogan problem. I am turkish and i say to the world: Muslims can commit a genocid & did it allready. This PM is a shame for Atatürks country !

this has gone far enough: ahmed says there was no genocide, so case closed. bashir et cie slaughered nobody - he just assisted people with equilibrating with their environment. besides being an imam hatip grad, mr erdogan has been precepted in genocide denial by his pal ahmedinejad; then again, given the sayfo all of that, each has a lot to teach the other.

When a prime minister makes such stupid, incorrect and racist statements (also lets not forget the Armenian genocide) the people of Turkey must respond. Please have the courage to respond to him, as it humiliates Turkey and shows that it has no place in Western world and should retreat to Islamic standards. It's the Turkish peoples choice.

What would say the Moslems if an Organization of the Christian Conference existed?
Guest - AtheistTurk (2009-11-09 01:45:03) :
There really is no end to his stupidity - makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time. On one hand, the comment is hilarious - you would expect a 5 year old to come out with something like that, not the Prime Minister of a once great country. However, having said that, I also feel sick with the knowledge that he is denying a genocide that has happened practically in front of our own eyes, with all the world's media and leading human rights organisations reporting and documenting the atrocities for the past few years. I feel so sorry for the millions of helpless victims, who the Turkish PM does not give one thought of consideration. This is so unbelievably disrespectful.

Erdogan and his cohorts spit in everyone faces and call it rain. All of us have grown less intelligent by listening/reading his words.

I a racist clown... A muslim would never commit genocide! Does Armenia ring the bell?
Guest - Ismail (2009-11-09 00:14:40) :
Mr Bashir was only indicted of crime for political reason, therefore; if Erdogan wel-comes him, thats his political play on other side of the game.

Erdogan gets scarier by the day.
Guest - Zarif (2009-11-08 23:19:07) :
Indeed this is one of the most racist and facsist statement ever bespoken by a western leader in recent decades. Deep in their hearts armenians may have a different oppinion, despite the fact that they had signed off on ever making claims against their mighty muslim neighbor. Erdogan seems to be on the right track for leading the muslim world. His leadership will span all extremes. To do this he will strive to stop Israel's interference with arm shipments to terrorist organizations but will embrace leaders like El-Bashir and Ahmedinejad. Sane freedom loving people living in Turkey will pay the price.

Can we get more explanation about this comment?
Guest - disgruntled (2009-11-08 22:28:16) :
Open mouth, insert foot once again Mr. PM. What was the court that ruled that the President must be put in chains? The Hague? Hmm. I'm continually amazed at the paradoxes that exist in this country
Guest - A Secular Palestinian American (2009-11-08 21:54:49) :
As a secular Palestinian American (some Turkish ancestry) think what Erdogan said to be ridiculous. Muslim born people, Jewish born people, or Christian born people can commit genocide, because we are all human beings. Didn't anyone tell Erdogan we are all human beings. He has this idea that Muslims are superior, but he wants to join with mostly Christian Europe in the European Union. Secular Turks shouldn't vote for this clown again. I like how Turkey has criticized Israel, but this leader is becoming too extreme. Can't you vote for someone else? He said that he went to Darfur and didn't see anything. This sounds so stupid and naive. Maybe, where he was taken there was no fighting and people knew he was coming. Seriously, he sounds like a stupid leader. If I were Turkish, I would really be embarassed to have him as a leader. The Alevis historically were persecuted by Sunni Turks during the Ottoman Empire. That's a real thing that happened. Please, get rid of this leader. Elect another person. He sounds just as bad as Berlusconi.

Lets drop all the polemics for a second. But how come he can forget Halapca? Or wasnt Saddam muslim enough?

You are a religious bigot Mr. Erdogan, I hope your days as PM are numbered.
Guest - Doyle (2009-11-08 19:59:30) :
Comments like those may be a very good indication as to the direction the country is heading. God forbid.
Guest - Ahmed (2009-11-08 19:55:43) :
Prime Minister Erdogan has seen the facts with his very eyes . Others just take the American and British media lies as facts . These media are so strong that they can turn white into black for the naive and ignorant. There is and was NO genocide in Darfue - Believe me!!
Guest - Vilgot (2009-11-08 19:03:55) :
I think it is a rather silly statement by the PM. In my view, religions (all of them) are some of the most abused concepts invented by mankind. Sure, the basic idea of each religion is usually wonderful with love, modesty, care for others etc, but the way the religious institutions (and their individual members) are abusing the name of religion is just shameless. The worst of them all is probably the history of the catholic church with its blody history (crucades, inquisitions etc) but also later pedophile scandals. But of course we can see members of other religions being corrupt, steal, commit murders, beat their wives, go to war etc.

“A Muslim can never commit genocide.” Surely he did not say THAT! Please tell me it's not true.
Guest - Hovhaness (2009-11-08 18:58:54) :
Erdogan says: " I visited Darfur and did not observe that genocide was being committed during his Darfur visit." Excellent, for Erdogan nothing seen therefore means no genocide . I guess he was looking for a signed order from Al-Bashir. Why is it not surprising to hear this type of statement from a Turkish PM ? Indeed, years of experience in dealing with genocide denial comes handy for any Turkish official to deny yet another genocide. One thing I agree with PM Erdogan is when he says "no muslim can commit genocide", that means Al Bashir is not a true Muslim, just like Talat, Enver and Çemal were not Muslims when they ordered the race-extermination of the Armenians, the model for twentieth century genocide.
Guest - Demir (2009-11-08 17:55:48) :
It's with statements like these that Mr Erdogan still reveals his true colours. What deeply erroneous, illogical thinking he is showing in this statement. He is also setting a dangerous precedent - I wonder what we would think if the president of the USA would say a similar thing about a Christian who is indicted for war crimes, like Radovan Karadzic for example?
Guest - 7 Hills (2009-11-08 17:45:25) :
hmmm.. did the PM really say that?
Guest - B. Baronian (2009-11-08 17:38:35) :
I am still laughing so hard after having read this article...Is Prime Minister Erdogan for real..? Does he think the Turkish people and the rest of the world are stupid or blind?
Guest - utcuk (2009-11-08 16:57:29) :
A very racist claim! All muslims are saints - that's what mr Erdogan is saying... Very funny!
