The youngest member of the attacked flotilla of aid ships, a 1-year-old baby, and his mother returned to Turkey early Tuesday as hundreds of passengers, including the boy’s father, remain in Israeli custody.

The Mavi Marmara was attacked by Israeli soldiers early Monday as it tried to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The presence of infant Kaan Türker Çetin onboard was the proof that the boats were civilian vessels, his mother, Nilüfer Çetin, said in a press conference after returning to Turkey.

“I do not regret that I brought my son,” Çetin said, adding that the boy’s father, Mavi Marmara engineer Ekrem Çetin, was in Israeli custody as of Tuesday, the day mother and son, along with six people from the cargo ship Gazze returned to Turkey.

Speaking at his party’s group meeting Tuesday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said the Israel government offered to send wounded Turkish citizens to Turkey. “We refused this offer, saying, ‘We have the power and will to take our wounded citizens,’” Erdoğan said. “Our two military air ambulances arrived there [in Israel], took the wounded people and are on their way back to Turkey.”

The prime minister said civilian planes from the Health Ministry were also on their way to Israel.

Rumors about death toll

The Humanitarian Relief Foundation, or İHH, which organized the flotilla, released the names Tuesday of 19 wounded Turks. Çetin said although she saw only five people dead on the ship, she was later told by Israeli soldiers that the death toll was 19.

Israeli Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharanovitch said nine people had died and dozens had been wounded, adding that those who attacked Israeli soldiers will be punished according to Israeli laws, the Anatolia news agency reported.

According to Çetin, at least five people on the Mavi Marmara were fatally injured during the attack and, despite calls from activists on the ship, Israeli soldiers did not allow any treatment for them. “They waited at least an hour. We had a surgery room, 18 doctors and two nurses on board, but the five people died,” she said at İHH in Istanbul.

“What we experienced on board was a breach of human rights. My motherhood was questioned because I brought my baby. This was the proof that our boat was civilian,” she said.

Speaking at a press conference at the İHH office in Istanbul on Tuesday after returning Monday night, Gazze cargo ship crewmember Hazım Emir said they were not treated harshly by the Israeli soldiers. “I don’t know why Israeli officials decided to deport us first,” Emir said. “Maybe they thought we would say how well they treated us when we returned to Turkey.”

İHH was one of the two organizers of the aid shipments; its office in Istanbul’s Fatih district has drawn many people since Monday.

People who were waiting for news about family members on the flotilla were calm Tuesday compared to the scene of devastation Monday. Most said they had been waiting in the İHH building watching the news and had not slept since Monday.

@Pacifist, San Remo does not apply in this case since Israel is NOT under threat from the sea and it is NOT underthreat from an external country. San Remo is only practiced in a real war situation where the blockade is internationally recognised/agreed. furthermore you cannot impose a blockade on a internal conflict, as much as Turkey cannot impose a blockade on Eastern Mediterranian simply because it feels PKK might be getting weapons via the sea. Illegal blockade = No San Remo. Even if it did, San Remo particularly states a 24 mile radius on top of the 12 mile shoreline from Israel/Gaza which makes the practice still illegal becuase the boats were raided over 40 miles away from the shoreline.

@Ali from Pakistan: your comment, as many others on this subject, posted by your countrymen, ask for immediate retaliation, eye for eye, and saying that Pakistan, as a Muslim brother would support Turkey - but: what good and positive result would you expect for war action for the Turkish /Pakistani people? That millions of people die- just for wiping out Israel? (I am not Jew and I live not in Israel or USA). Do you think your country´s lifestyle is so much to be desired? Blowing up other Muslims who pray in Mosques, supporting terrorists who kill innocent people all over the world, denying your women their rights as human beings- you really think that Turkish people will find that a desirable lifestyle? Eye to eye actions belong to times which have long passed - thousands of years in fact.

San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea, 12 June 1994: "67. Merchant vessels flying the flag of neutral States may not be attacked unless they: (a) are believed on reasonable grounds to be carrying contraband or breaching a blockade, and after prior warning they intentionally and clearly refuse to stop, or intentionally and clearly resist visit, search or capture; (b) engage in belligerent acts on behalf of the enemy; (c) act as auxiliaries to the enemy s armed forces; (d) are incorporated into or assist the enemy s intelligence system; (e) sail under convoy of enemy warships or military aircraft; or (f) otherwise make an effective contribution to the enemy s military action, e.g., by carrying military materials, and it is not feasible for the attacking forces to first place passengers and crew in a place of safety. Unless circumstances do not permit, they are to be given a warning, so that they can re-route, off-load, or take other precautions.

Humanity, I completely agree with you. And I have to say that This aid looks an islamic help to the people of islam in another country. An aid should only be done for humanist reasons. Putting Turkey and islam in the same pot is not a good idea when helping other nations. A help should only be done for humanist reasons. And you can not act in any way you want when you help. the decission of such an operation by Israel was wrong. But attacking a soldier of a nation who completely think that all the middle east world is against him is very dangerous too. And beein on this ship was not this soldier's decission. I was a soldier in my country and somehow I could have been used on such a mission for my country. I don't know what would I do in such a condition when some islamic people attack me with pipes and axes. But I know I could use my gun as well.

The sort of mother who would take their one year old son on a boat of peace delivering aid to the needy is one who believes in the virtues of humanity and the responsibility of a nation to follow international law offer a duty of care to all nationals. Clearly Israel neither observes the virtues of humanity nor cares about international law in their or the waters of other nations. This lady made a mistake only by virtue of her compassion. Sadly the tyranical comments on this buletin board are summary testament to an evil world populous fully capable of supporting of Israel's genocide. All beware as Israel have effectively declared war on anyone who defends Palestine by their actions and Turkey have been quick to pick on the lead. How many "allies" will turkey collect? That is the burning question.

Turkish people - you are walking on the route of being like Iran !! Your government leads you to the third world ! I have been to turkey 2 times and found wonderful people, but with the behaviour of your leaders, I don't think I will ever come back Although you are Muslim, try to be objective - if a country a neighbour country will fire missiles on your country for more than 6 years, wouldn't you inspect the cargo they are importing ?

@Humanity - this is a humanitarian crisis and religion has got nothing to do with it! you have not clearly grasped that Turkey is no longer that secular only concerned with its internal affairs but Erdogan and the AKP have brought Turkey at all international levels condemning what wrong is going on in the world today! It expresses the views of majority of the Turks! No Arab country has the guts to stand up against the Israelis except Turkey, and I think they should get credit for that!

I have been to Turkey many times in the last 44 years. My wife was born in Turkey. I have travelled all over Turkey and I know your country. I am appalled that the Turkish people have allowed your beautiful country to be hijacked by Islamists who are allowing Turkey to provide cover for the extremism of Iran. Attaturk must be crying in his grave at how they are destroying the Turkish Republic.

Mother is teaching her child the importance of humanity by showing what even 10,000 tons of supply can do for deprived and humiliated Palestinian people by attacking Turkish ships with Turkish flag on it, israel just wage war on Turkiye. Turkiye should send more humanitarian ships, and should also send Turkish navy frigates as escort israel made deadly mistake....they must pay for it, eye for an eye. and Pakistan nation will support Turkiye, without question or delay. That is a promise. coward israeli soldier were jumping off the boat to run away from sailors and aid workers. This shows they are coward, even with big guns.

As usual the Zionists try to flood all discussion. The sole blame is Israels. The country is a cesspool of racism. There is no point trying to talk peace to the pirates.

Have to agree with the other posters. This woman should be arrested for child abuse. An infant has no business on a ship taking humanitarian aid to anywhere. Turkey should have been more responsible with it's young citizens and this woman should have never been able to board this ship.

Who takes a 1 year old on a ship like that? Someone who is using her baby as a prop, to pretend that she is there for humanity. What a disgrace!

Bringing a 1 yr old baby on board this vessel does not prove the group was there with peaceful intentions. How does a baby know where they keep the ammunition and other weapons caches? Sorry - the baby was ill-thought out and the parents need to seriously reconsider what's in the best interest of their child. The flotilla was warned and knew precisely what would happen if they entered those waters. That said, Israel surely can't keep up the siege of Gaza indefinitely. Forget what it's doing to the inhabitants there. Israel's own psyche is at risk. PM Erdogan is the worst kind of populist and history will show that his grand scheme to use Islam as a banner and its defense as a foreign policy tool will bring nothing positive to Turkey. Now that the economy has settled on a good track, he's clearly pursuing the religious agenda that so many worried about before. Be afraid.

How very very irresponsible. How would a mother dare take her baby to such a mission in the first place? How the captain of the ship granted the permission to take this baby on board his ship on her way to risk the breaking of the blockade of Israeli navy?

Israel is at fault in having reacted out of proportion - nobody can disclaim that! But the activist have been warned that there would be trouble from Israel if they would go ahead. So this was a potentiallly dangerous and highly explosive travel- as happenings confirmed. What conscientious mother would go herself and bring her baby into such a situation? I do not know of anyone. There was no pressing need of her and the baby on the boat, I believe.

If Israel would fake British and Australian passports in order to murder a man in a sovereign country--Dubai--then try to brazen it out by saying "we neither confirm nor deny", why does it surprise anyone that they would murder peace activists in international waters on a neutral flag ship? That is like acting surprised because a snake bit you. It IS a snake, isn't it?

Just because someone wants to do something good does not mean they can go about it in any way they want. Goodness or humanitarianism does not justify every action.

Down with the AKP, and Islamization of anything. Religon should not dictate the path of anyone's life, we should dictate our own paths. Turkey needs to wake up in this time of conflict and realize it's position is not to lead Islam, but itself from a path that has a dark future. A true Turk was never a muslim to begin with, remember that. Turks just so happened to bump into Islam first, and lead people under it's flag simply because it worked then. NOW, it does not work. Turkey's progress is being undermined by a bunch of deceptive politicians, who believe a male should still fundamentally be dominant over a female, and that ALLAH will one day save us all. NO MORE TRICKERY. I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

Having baby in a ship is not using children as human shields. Women, children, elderly people the are all part of a human society. They raise their voices and carry human aids not guns so they will not look like a terminator. They are like one of us.

Funny to see how many Israelis are hiding behind Turkish names and posting for Israel's greater good. And since when is it questionable to take a baby on board of a ship in international waters on a peaceful mission? The blockade of Gaza is collective punishment and therefore illegal. The only permission the convoy needed to seek to land is from the Gazans which they of course had. "Turkey and its current government is showing its true colours" - you have cheek, Mister. For what? For not siding with war criminals? You make it sound as if Turkey murdered those people. Ironically, the only one who shows its true colours is Israel. And finally the world gets to see everything quite clear. The next aid ships shall be accompanied by the Turkish navy! Let's see if Israel can take on the second largest army in the Nato. Haydi Turkiye!

Full respect to the brave and honourable, indeed courageous Turkish people like this lady to stand up for truth and decency. Its intersting how the people are falling over themselves to justify and defend the heineous act committed by the Israelis. Does anyone remember the isralie Army general state that 'The Israeli army is the most moral in the world'. Most have by now to read the opposite in what most Israelis and their energetic friends say, as their actions prove a direct opposite. I will be most interested to observe what becomes of this and even more interesting will be watching those who will be going into PR overdrive to try and explain and justify the Israeli postion.

What kind of mother would bring a 1 year old on a ship going into a conflict zone? Must be down right mad, and the social authorities of Turkey should investigate this mothers ability to raise a child.

This shows that flutila was on a peace mition...Why would a woman take her kid, if she was going on War? This certifies that it was just for Peace and aid. After Israeli terrorism on Palistine, they even didnt allow aid to go there...This was the first time it happened that aid went there...and Israel showed its true colour. Muslims are proud of our Turkish brothers and sisters.

Is Israel now transforming into a conscience-less state that possesses no regard whatsoever toward humanity that carry out heavy bombardment on the ships dedicated to deliver humanitarian aid? a state that resort to the "self defense" and "human shield" as an excuse of their repugnant onslaught? Wait a second that has always been the true color of Israel

What are they protesting against? Israel for shooting people with axes and metal bars in their hands on a gaza aid ship? These people need to learn civil disobedience. Otherwise the Israeli media wouldn't be showing people with metal bars and axes attacking Israeli troops. And no the video is not fake its real. Unless their is a video of a defenseless person shot dead then their is no proof of Israeli soldiers doing anything wrong. And I'm not Israeli I'm Turkish. Look if you had orders to search a boat by your government and people ran at you with knives and axes and you had a gun you would shoot them too. It's called self-defense.
