Actress and scriptwriter Meral Okay died this morning in her Istanbul apartment, fellow actor Ali Sunal has announced on his Twitter account. She was 53.
 
Okay had been receiving treatment for cancer, reports said. She had most recently been writing for the hit television series "Muhteşem Yüzyıl" (Magnificent Century), which has achieved great success both in Turkey and in neighboring countries. 
 
Okay entered the spotlight with her work on the 1998-2001 hit TV series "İkinci Bahar" (Second Spring), in which she both starred and helped produce. Okay acted alongside veterans of Turkish cinema such as Şener Şen and Türkan Şoray in the series.
 
In 1984, Okay married actor Yaman Okay, who died 10 years later of cancer at the age of 41.
