Militants ambush Gendarmerie special operations team, no casualties: Armed Forces

ANKARA
Militants ambushed a Gendarmerie special operations team near the district of Nusaybin in the southeastern province of Mardin on Nov. 16, the Turkish General Staff stated on its website.

The incident, which occurred at around 3:20 p.m. local time, did not cause any casualties, the army said.

"Members of the separatist terrorist group set up an ambush and fired 100-150 rounds of ammunition as well as RPG-7 rocket propelled-grenades," the army said, using a term it generally employs to describe the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants. The Gendarmerie Forces officers returned fire, leading the militants to withdraw from the scene.

“Up to 30 rounds of ammunition hit a wheeled tactical armed vehicle and 40 rounds of ammunition hit the second one. There were no casualties to the personnel,” the General Staff’s statement said.

Nusaybin is located a few kilometers across from the northern Syrian city of Qamishli. The incident came as the leader of the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), Masoud Barzani, is set for a Nov. 16 visit to Diyarbakır, the largest city in southeastern Turkey, where he will meet Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
