Local court stops a provincial ban on alcohol consumption in public spaces
ISPARTA - Doğan News AgencyA local court in Isparta invalidated June 4 a circular issued by the governor that banned alcohol consumption in public spaces within the boundaries of the province. The court ruled that even though in some cases a ban was necessary to guarantee public security, such a broad ban was disproportionate for this purpose and could result in serious restrictions of individual freedoms.
The circular had entered into force on March 7, weeks before the start of a national debate about restrictions on alcohol, following a new bill proposal from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). However, it was challenged by a group of attorneys who filed a complaint with the local administrative court on April 7.
According to the court's verdict, the Governor's Office had the authority to regulate alcohol consumption, in order to take measures to reduce security and public health risks. However, it also stated that such wide bans would cause "irreparable damage" in terms of fundamental rights, if implemented.
