Turkish Cyprus expects Muslim countries around the world to lift their embargos imposed on the northern third of the Mediterranean island, northern Cypriot President Derviş Eroğlu said yesterday.
“Unfortunately, it is not only EU countries that have embargos on Turkish Cyprus; Muslim countries also have embargos against us, so we especially expect the embargo on transportation to be lifted by Muslim countries,” he told a group of journalists in Istanbul following a conference on ongoing Cyprus negotiations.

“In the past, first Iran, then Azerbaijan, tried to launch direct flights to Turkish Cyprus, but both attempts were prevented due to pressure by Greek Cypriots,” Eroğlu said.

Noting, however, that Ankara’s influence had ensured Turkish Cyprus’ acceptance as an observer member of the

Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Eroğlu said, “We think Turkey has this influence over many Muslim countries to convince them about northern Cyprus.”
All options on table

Asked whether Palestine’s efforts to be recognized in the international community could be a model for Turkish Cyprus, Eroğlu said that if negotiations come to a deadlock because of Greek Cyprus’ attitude, the territory could pursue any option.

“Our first priority is finding a solution through negotiations, of course. But despite all our goodwill for the future of the negotiations, if the Greek Cypriots continue with their negative attitudes, then all the other alternatives would be on the table; there are also examples like Kosovo and [South] Sudan,” Eroğlu said.

Turkish Cyprus also expects EU members to exert pressure on Greek Cyprus to pave
the way for a lifting of the embargo imposed on Turkish Cyprus in return for providing financial support to Greek Cypriots, Eroğlu said.

“If the EU tells the Greek Cypriots something like ‘we will give you financial support but, in return, we will lift the embargo imposed on Turkish Cyprus,’ this would be something to motivate the Greek Cypriots more in peace negotiations,” he said.

Not hopeful on talks with Greek Cyprus

Eroğlu also said he did not feel very hopeful about the Greek Cyprus’ Democratic Rally Party leader Nikos Anastasiadis’ speeches regarding the negotiations with Turkish Cyprus ahead of elections in the south of the island.

“Anastasiadis recently gave some negative statements about the ongoing negotiations, but I want to believe that these were words that were said during the [heat of an] election campaign,” Eroğlu said.

@Nikos and others....doesn't take long to forget about Makarios and the continuing influence of the church in the greek republic of Cyprus...

Nikos T seems to forget the Christian crusades and the murder, rape and pillage they carried out through out Europe... till they came up against the Muslims! He thinks no other country mixes religion with politics yet George Bush was always going on about God and he even used the word 'Crusade' before invading Iraq... Adam Polk is right. Nikos is a major troll, in all his comments on every article he puts Turks down while forgetting how Greece is going. Come on Nikos... Where's the love, bro?

First of all, Nikos are you arabic? Obviously you are not or else you would have known that the word "jihad" means a struggle against oneself in arabic. Not a holy war. Second, why was a holy war declared by others in the middle east? Because they were being murdered in their own lands by non-muslims and robbed of their lands. Prior to the state of Israel being established, there was peace in the middle east. So again, you make no sense whatsoever.

Turkey is the growing power with our Turkic brothers we are a force to be reckonded with,Turkey should expand economicly to the East, help develope they economies,Turkey should be the gateway into Europe for they exports,by building a freight terminal to access ports in the Med for world wide shipping would benifit Turkey and those with out access to ports..Turkey would have the biggest freight terminal in the world. It would double Turkeys GDP.

@Nikos T., so far you never got an aergument out of me, all i did was pointing out you follys back at you, such as the last one; "Conscience in the western world is guided by education, freedom of speech and respect to humanity." A Utopian concept, tried and failed under Communism, wherein 60 Million lost their lives in GULAGS. Six Million Jews fell victim to Natzional Sociaist (NAZI) & "MEIN KAMPF" rantings during WW2! No thanks Nikos T, the Abrahamic Ten Commendments will do fine for me!

@Ken, you keep coming back with no real arguments. Conscience in the western world is guided by education, freedom of speech and respect to humanity. Last time I heard of crusades was in the 15th century. Last time I heard of Jihad, was today. It was some members of your so called "brotherhood". If it's OK with you to live in the 15th century, maybe it's not for all Turks.
