Land Forces Commander visits Balyoz convicts in jail

ANKARA
Land Forces Cmdr. Gen. Hulusi Akar has paid Eid al-Adha feast visits to “Balyoz” (Sledgehammer) coup case convicts in Mamak Military Prison in Ankara.

Accompanied by Land Forces Chief of Staff Gen. İhsan Uyar, Akar met with active officers whose convictions were approved by the Supreme Court of Appeals on Oct. 9.

The Balyoz coup plot case was brought to the agenda after documents titled “Balyoz Operation Plan,” dating back to 2003, were revealed by Turkish daily Taraf three years ago.

The Supreme Court of Appeals upheld the convictions of 237 suspects, including high-ranking retired generals who are alleged to be involved in coup planning, while quashing the convictions of 63 other suspects.
