People’s sincere concerns are being “exploited by misinformation” regarding the Taksim Gezi Park demolition, causing “unpleasant reflections” in the city, Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş said May 31.

Speaking at a press conference following a bloody police crackdown on protesters earlier in the day, Topbaş dismissed claims that the park was being demolished to build a mall in its place. “It is simply the mandatory removal and transfer of trees in the area in order to enlarge the pedestrian walk,” he claimed.

“The work that will be done is not on the scale of a shopping mall, and what we see here is the exploitation of our nature-loving citizens with misinformation,” Topbaş said.

“Sadly there are those who exploit people over this, and who expect political gains from this,” he added.

Police forces attacked Taksim Gezi Park protesters at dawn with tear gas and violence for a second consecutive day this morning in a new attempt to disperse crowds.

Oh, let's just give him the benefit of a doubt, and advise him to demonstrate his clear love of the Turkish people by backing off and canceling WHATEVER the plans were. Let him show the people that he was mislead about how strong his people's feelings were about the park. Let him demonstrate his sincerity and concern for their opinions by restoring the park and apologizing for the unrest. Offer him the opportunity to do that.

oh dear, manipulate to accumulate.Wellcome to the TURKISH SPRING which reminds me ARAB SPRING.Turkish police turned to a water cannon and smoke grenades to drive back protesters who are furious that a local park will be developed into a shopping mall. The unrest reflects growing disquiet at the authoritarianism of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and his Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP). Mr.Mayor spill the beans,NO SMOKE , NO FIRE they say.....

The Prime Minister wanted a mosque in Taksim. The City Mayor is of the same religious persuasion. Watch this space.

You can cover it with whatever facade you want. A mall is a mall.

Topbas makes a fool of him self. Down with him. PM Erdogan wants a mall so he will get a mall.

If he had an ounce, one ounce of decency he would quit from his post. None within the AKP know what responsibility or duty to a public office is nor do they understand the principles of accountability for they only harbour sinister ambitions intent on changing the very fabric of the secular society of the Turkish Republic.
