Israeli troops shot dead a man trying to infiltrate the Sinai border with Egypt and wounded another on Friday, the Israeli military said, in the latest in a series of deadly incidents along a once quiet frontier.

Both men, who crossed the desert border under cover of darkness, turned out to be unarmed when Israeli medics found them after dawn, a military spokeswoman said.

She would not divulge the identities or nationalities of the infiltrators though Israeli media said they were Palestinians from the nearby Gaza Strip.

"Israeli border police identified two suspects infiltrating Israel through the Israel-Egypt border," the spokeswoman said. When they failed to heed orders to stop, the troops "fired at the suspects," she added.

Last month armed men shot and killed an Israeli who was working on a fence being put up along the border, where tensions have risen since former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, an Israeli ally, was overthrown a year ago in a popular revolt.

Israel says the Egyptian authorities have lost control of the vast Sinai desert, with Bedouin bandits, jihadists and Palestinian militants from Gaza filling the vacuum.

African migrants have also poured across the porous border in the past two years, with the Israeli government under growing pressure from public opinion to halt the influx.

@Rich Bind, you certainly are in a bind (no pun intendet) because you are unable to respond to @Lion, so you skip into the clouds by divertin attention about Kurds. Please note that if would be left alone right now, they would slip into a Civil Warwith unknown consequences for the Region. Do you know that there is hardly a village or a hamlet without Kurdish Population in Turkey?

Cloud Chaser - You are making a statement without understanding the political implication of the situation. Hamas & PLO are't the same. When Israel reacts to Hama,is a Gut reaction to Iran.Israel needs the PLO and eventually will use it to separate the 1.6 Million "Israeli Arabs" who are Israeli citizens (the "Good Arabs) from Palestinians, whom Israel does fear because, if they too are absorbed in Eretz Israel, they will pose an Ethmological Imbalance at Voting Box, a great disaster for Israel!

@Chas Spencer your point is clear, and strenghtens my argument. Had israel commenced the same bombardment of gaza as it had of southern lebannon, there would be no "palestinian problem" any more. The claims that isarel shows no inhibition in it's assault on gaza are contrary to the facts.

Turkey should take lessons from the IDF. Perhaps then, Turks would be able to deal more effectively with their terrorism problems. Regards

@Cloud Chaser, if you want to know the payload of a F16 aircraft, just go on Google and pose the question, then you will really see how the IDF, in their inability & frustration against Hezbolah obliterated the part of South Beyrut and also destroyed the brifges & road infrastructure of Lebanon. All the homemade "Rockets" fired at Israel will not amount to a half payload of an F-16.

@Lion: Just go to the Kurdish Media website and you will see a list of atrocities by Turks dating back to 1821 to the present day. They list the mass killings of Kurds, Arimenians, Greeks, Syrians, Yeminites and more, all by Turks. Not to mention the displacement of millions of Kurds. Sorry, in this regard Turkey is number one. The repression of Kurds in Turkey goes on every day, but they do not get the attention of the world press,

bombing run per jet. that means ~ 40 bombing runs per jet per day. times ~350 F16 jets in the IAF that means ~14,000 bombing runs per day , each on the order of 7,000 kg of high explosives - that means 98 million kg ( or 98 kilotons) of high explosives bombardment per day. As reference - the atomic bombs that destroyed nagasaki and hiroshima were rated at 16 and 21 kilotons of TNT. Thats the capability. "No inhibition" is a nice slogan, but not even close to reality, according to the numbers.

@The Lion can you provide any reference for your assertions? To my understanding the average payload of an israel F-16 (which is the predominant bomb carrying vahicle in the israeli air force) is around 7 metric tons. any single F-16 can make it from the nearest israeli air base to anywhere in gaza in 10 minutes (actually, probably much less if already at mach 1.2), so round trip of 20 minutes, add refuel and rearming - another 15 minutes if they are the least bit competent, so 35 minutes per
