There were no immediate reports of any impact.

Loud blast in Tel Aviv, sirens wailing: AFP

A loud blast rocked Tel Aviv on Friday afternoon as sirens wailed to warn of an incoming rocket for the second day running, an AFP correspondent at the scene said.

Police said sirens had sounded but could not immediately confirm that anything had hit the Tel Aviv area, in an alert that came a day after a rocket fired from Gaza landed in the sea just off the sprawling coastal city.

Shortly before the sirens went off, AFP reporters in central Gaza City reported hearing a loud bang that appeared to be caused by a rocket being fired from the area.

Thursday's sirens had sparked scenes of panic in Tel Aviv, with people running everywhere in search of shelter, or lying on the ground with their hands over their heads, an AFP correspondent said and TV footage showed.

It was the farthest that a rocket from Gaza had ever hit inside Israel, and came as the air force pressed a major bombing campaign across the Hamas-run territory.

Israeli news networks said it was the first time rockets had been fired at the city since the 1991 Gulf War, when it was hit by Iraqi Scud missiles.

The attack was claimed by Islamic Jihad, which said it had fired an Iranian-made Fajr 5 rocket at the city.

Tel Aviv-Jaffa lies some 60 kilometres (36 miles) north of the Gaza Strip. Fajr 5 rockets have a range of up to 75 kilometres (46 miles).

Earlier in the day, the army said another rocket struck Rishon LeTzion, Israel's fourth largest city, which lies 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Gaza.

I pity the Israeli citizens who are led by warmongers messrs Netanhayu and co who use the people like a tool for they election campaign, they use fear as a campaign message.Hamas and Hezbollah, Iran have been prepared for a Israeli attack, they have advanced weapons from Iran.,Israel will be in for a suprise.Iran has supplied Hezbollah enough rockets to hit Israel with five thousand rockets a day, according the Haarezt and Hezbollah.Netanhayu,s election campaign could be very costly in life terms,

Mr Jon jobs, what's this non-sense about killing Palestinians... 900 mortars and bombs that fell on Israeli cities and no pal was killed. Until we said "enough is enough", when we had to run for shelter 5 times a day. Unfortunately the Hamas doesn't hold in too much regard the life of citizens on his territory as well otherwise his "soldier" (a.k.a terrorists by the western world) would not be shooting from schools... But Jon, if you convince yourself, that's enough, no need for real facts...

Israel has two choices: 1. let the pals be free, which will never happen because all the land belongs to israel, what a joke; 2. Israel has to kill all the pals in order to make peace, peace process, do you follow? Therefore killing all the pals is the only solution for israel. lets close our eyes, ears and mouths, let Israel kill all of them and then see what next?

Murat you sound very happy that Israeli citizens and children are afraid. This is so not unlike you, a person who cares about human rights... The hatred must be very intense for laughing at women and children under fire....

Murat, I'm afraid even if Israel would allow 'technical imports' they wouldnt know what to dowith it in any case. And these rockets..its like a child playing with matches..someone should tell them that they can get burnt..Maybe you can just mention it to them ...if you have the time ..thanks.

How dare those Palestinians fire primitive improvised rockets from there concentration camp into Israel? Lets rain down bombs on the most populated area in the world, that is sure to archive long lasting peace. Israeli logic!

If only Israel allowed imports of technical materials into Gaza then maybe Hamas could target their rockets more accurately towards the military installations only and the civilian Israelis (are there any left?) can then go about their business without running around like chickens. Just an idea...
