Iron maker to produce power with waste gas

KARABÜK - Anadolu Agency
Turkish iron and steel producer Kardemir will generate its own power through a new gas-fired power plant that will run on excess gas produced by the massive facility in the northwestern province of Karabük.

The new, $62-million power plant will transform waste gas from the Kardemir plant into energy, enabling the company to procure energy for its needs as well as to sell others.

“We will produce a remarkable added-value thanks to this system. This is a modern investment considering the costs,” Kardemir General Director Fadıl Demirel said Aug. 20 during a presentation meeting at the new plant.

The plant has been built in cooperation with a Chinese group that provided the equipment and engineering services.

The company already has another power plant, and with the addition of the 50-megawatt new facility, it will not need to buy any external power, company officials said.

Demirel also said the company aimed to raise its current 2 million-ton production to 3 million tons in 2014, adding that growth would be maintained with investments.
