A drive by the far-right Golden Dawn party to get Greeks to donate blood only for their fellow citizens has outraged doctors and medical authorities, who have slammed the initiative as racist and inhuman.
Golden Dawn, which enjoyed unprecedented success in last month's election after promising to rid Greece of all immigrants, put up posters in Athens calling for volunteers to donate blood "only for Greeks who need our help."
"All the bottles of blood we collect will be handed over to patients we choose and to no one else," the party said in a statement. "This right to choose belongs not just to Golden Dawn members, but to all volunteer blood donors."
The party, which denies it is neo-Nazi, said it had managed to get such a blood bank up and running at a state hospital in Athens.
But health officials said this would be illegal, and the hospital's manager, Yiannis Stefanou, said there would be no discrimination as the rules required all blood donations to be made available to all patients who need them.
One of the biggest doctors' unions in Athens said the Golden Dawn initiative was an "insane, unscientific, illegal and racist action" and promised to do everything necessary to protect the "sacred procedure of blood donation".

"This would be inhuman. If someone needs blood, he or she should have every right to get it no matter who they are," a health ministry official said.
Golden Dawn, which won seats in parliament this year for the first time, has been flaunting its success by pushing increasingly prominent anti-immigrant initiatives in recent weeks.
Five years of recession linked to the euro zone debt crisis have fuelled increasingly virulent anti-immigrant sentiment in Greece, which has long struggled to cope with an influx of illegal migrants from Asia and Africa.

Turkish public opinion is highly interested with everything concerning Golden Dawn and Turkey sees its growth with concern, If Turkey helped the Greek authorities to control the borders in order for immigration not to take large dimensions then maybe GD would not have gained such popularity...

@ Sifis Petac Greece complains of Albanian and Bulgraians immergrants as a problem as well,if Greece didnt want immergrants then you shoundnt have joined the European Union, the whole consept of the union is open borders.the fact that Greece allows a party like the NAZIS in shows they lack of respect to fellow union members as well as the old citizens of Greece who lived through the Nazi days.Greece should be kicked out of the union for allowing such a party.

if this neo-nazi golden dawn party came to power, they would plant mines along the turkish border and the illegal immigrants would be piled up in concentration camps. so golden dawn wouldve tackled the problem in a racist way:P.Anyways enjoy the sea elias. izmir is quite hot aswell.

Enjoy the sea Elias :-) I wish I too was back near the sea, preferably on the coast line of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus!

@Chris Green, kenan atagün My Hurriet friends, thanks for the discussion, more or less we agree. If there are some different opinions, that is normal since we don't know each other. We are behind monitors and not face to face, where people can communicate better...The article is very correct and lets stay at the fact that behind numbers are people... Illegal or not, one emigrant is God's/Allah's creature and we have to support them humanistic. Athens, is very hot and i go to the sea! GULE GULE!

Elias: On your direct point to me, you are right, but then I never lose a chance to have a good dig! On the subject matter, actually I do have sympathy with the Greek position concerning emigrants and I have said many times before that the EU should work with and support Turkey is securing the borders. Britain for one would benefit from investing in a Turkic/Greco border initiative because it would be cheaper than having the illegals washing up here where they are not wanted either!

@kenan atagün-part two: Since when official data is α blame?...only last year 135.000 people entered illegally through evros river (Meriç Nehri)...Is it a small responsibility? In contrary of what you understood, i refer to responsibilies and not that official Turkey State is committing that, and this very essential for our discussion. Regarding the "bailout loans", it is very disapointing that each discussion regarding Greece is treated by many Turkish people as a chance to provoke..

@kenan atagün. I fully agree with you (regarding your first paragraph), i clarified that already at my initial message. But you are missing something: Do we have to solve that problem by our selves??? When part of those emigrants go to eu, eu countries return them back to the first country of eu, from where those people entered...and that is a part of eu laws. In the same time we can not send them back to their countries due to huge bureaucratic problems of their origin countries...

Although i disagree with the exclusion of the non-Greeks from providing blood, the issue with the illegal immigrants has been out of controll. I blame Turkey, because they do not do something to stop this flow, from their borders to ours. You just do not want them, so you let the slavers acting uncontrolled.

regardless of how those immigrants enter greece, u have no right to treat poor people like slaves and discriminate against them.greek gov could try resolving this issue on its own rather than putting the blame on turkey like usual.but the point is greeks will be in trouble with europe soon due to the rising racism.eu could stop providing u bailout loans .
