If North Cyprus shows flexibility, what is needed for a solution in the island is already in existence, the recently elected South Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said in an interview with a Greek weekly published March 10.

Expressing his expectations about Turkey’s contribution to a new process, Anastasiades reiterated his stance prior to elections and said he wanted a solution respectful to both Turkish and Greek Cypriots’ rights.

“We want a solution that will reunite our island, without backwardness or concessions. I will never accept a definitive division of my nation and I will always strive for a solution that will guarantee the human rights of every Cypriot,” he said, adding that any solution initiative should be directly monitored by the European Union.

Anastasiades also emphasized that in order to prevent the process’ failure a consensus of all the political forces in Greek Cyprus as well as a close cooperation with Greece was indispensable. The Greek Cypriot president added that he was ready to talk with any country that intended to make a contribution to a solution. “We want the United States and Britain to use their leverage. We will also benefit from the Russian’s good relations with Turkey. We will ask Russia to convince Ankara [to help],” he said.

Anastasiades, who was the main South Cypriot political leader to support the UN-led imitative for the reunification of the island in 2004, said it was not beneficial anymore to talk about the so-called “Annan plan” and that a new process needed to be initiated.

Actually neither side have anything to gain from unification. That GC's lost homes and land is largely their own fault or certainly that of their leaders at the time. Turkish Cypriots lost more overall and certainly have nothing whatsoever to gain. All that is required is the the Immoveable Properties Commission to agree the reparation for BOTH sides given that TC's lost lands too, perhaps solve the Maras problem and access to the ports (following KKTC recognition) and that should be enough.

It seems that Part 3 of my posts was somehow not published so I'll just sum up. GCs have really nothing to gain from a unification. They've lost their homes and lands but they've worked hard and made up their lives again. It's rather an emotional issue. On the contrary TCs know that a unification will improve their lives. RoC can give more opportunities to them than Turkey. This is exactly the reason why they the have voted in favor of Anan plan while GCs are still skeptical a bout it.

Yeah the G Cypriots glorious E O KA fighters, had shot English troops in the back, killed British innocent civilians, shot at ambulances, attack and killed their neighbours T Cypriots they reneged on all counts; just the same the G Cypriots and the newly elected Mr. Nicos Anastasiades are still calling E.O.K.A heroes and furthermore they expect from Turkey contributions nonetheless??

PB - Having published an extensive history on the Cyprus Question, I am reasonably confident with the majority of my observations although sometimes I am deliberately mischievous;-) I have, by the way, commented on the Falklands article too.

Pawel Bury - Britain came to Cyprus in 1865 initially as a friendly power and an ally of the Ottoman Empire. Then, after the Berlin Convention in July 1878 and by treaty with our then allies, Cyprus was leased to Britain in the sum of 1M STG by instalments. Additionally and as a part of the treaty, the Royal Navy would protect the Dardenelles from Russia who had just won the Turkic Russo war of 1877/8. Cyprus became a Crown Colony only in 1923 and until 1960. OK? EOKA were NOT Military - Thugs!

@pawel bury there was also a poll in cyprus(annan) the tcs said yes to be with there gcs brothers & sisters and the gcs rejected this!! Eoka was a terrorist organisation with aims of enosis and to cleanse the muslim turkish community, which would have been successful but for the lawful intervention of turkey!Tcs did work with the british what would you expect under these terrible circumstances pawel. As for Anastasiades we have to give this guy a chance he was decent enough to say yes to annan

@mark mark, we in the Turkish Republic of Northern cyprus we have one man one vote. As far as I know in the greek zone they have one man one vote so I dont follow your post at all. The greek side has a different way of goverment that the TRNC but that is their way,we have a democratic system with a parliment and a president. We have a 2 state system, the greek side want to run the whole island, but that is just their dream and it will never happen.I agree with Dennis Kavaz.

@ thessalonian, well you again posted more rubbish and lies ! EOKA was not only against the brits but also against the Turkish cypriots, just read chris greens post he also tells the truth, something you greeks/greek cypriots fail to do all the time! After we won the war we captured your plans for the island and there it was in black and white,a 100% greek run island, and part of the now Bankrupt state of greece without any Turkish cypriots. Read your history and tell the truth!!

Part 2: EOKA B' was a result of the Greek junta and never had the support of the majority of the Cypriots. It is a big lie that all Cypriots were or are in favor of what EOKA B'. This is simple propaganda. However cruelties were a really nice excuse for Turkey to come on board. Another big lie is that it was an instrument of Makarios... Anyway, by now Cyprus is a modern country with secured human rights for everyone, which is still not the case for Turkey.

Part 1: EOKA was a military organization formed in order to kick off the British from Cyprus. Cypriots fought bravely against their British oppressors. And they did well. It's obvious why Chris refers to them as terrorists but he cannot explain what were Brits doing on the island at first place. There was a poll at the Falklands the other day, maybe they should have done the same thing in Cyprus. But democracy is good only when it works on our interests. TCs worked with Brits against EOKA.
