Gays will be discharged from the army as punishment for their "lifestyle choices," according to the new penalty regulation draft of the Turkish Armed Forces, daily Milliyet reported on Nov. 26.

For the first time in Turkey’s history, homosexuality is clearly indicated as “unnatural imminence” in the military body’s draft.

LGBT associations have harshly criticized the new change, labeling it discriminatory and a violation of human rights as an individual’s personal life choice has nothing to do with their ability to perform military duties.

Other behaviors set to be punished with discharge under the new penalty regulation draft are murder, bribery, fraud and imprisonment for more than one year.

Defense Minister İsmet Yılmaz is expected to introduce the draft regulation to the Cabinet today.

@ B12- The woman reference was referring to certain jobs in the US military. There are over 120 jobs in the Army for example, only a handful are classified as "combat arms", thos are the jobs I'm against women being in. I'm all for equality on many matters but it is factual a man and woman’s body are not the same thus there are certain things that require men to do. Sorry, I'm not God; I had no say with creating human anatomy.

US Observer: Sorry, but your comments dont make sense. You are suggesting that heterosexual men are all stupid and get distracted by women and gays despite being professionally trained soldiers. This would in effect mean that they have low IQs are are all stupid. Is that what you mean? In respect of women, they obviously make better tactitions than men and so are complementary to men in combat rather than keeping just 100% brawn content in the army...

I certainly disagree in this case with the accusation "Turkey is moving backward" by not letting gays serve in the military. I understand the discrimination argument. Performing homosexual acts is a choice, much like choosing a religion...which clearly everyone would object to being discrimated based off religion. The issue here is morale and safety. Soldiering is serious business, uneeded distractions get people killed. I feel the same about women serving in combat arms in the US military.

This is in the Koran..."And if such men (who have no need of woman) are "mindful of God" they could, in the hereafter, be in "gardens and in bliss, rejoicing in their Lord's gifts" which include, "devoted youths like hidden pearls". All sounds a bit gay to me!

I think it would be better for world peace if ONLY gay people ware allowed to join the army. Then disputes could be settled by pillow fights and peace settlements made while drinking pink champagne cocktails! I am only kidding...but john albay..just one thing, AIDS is now a much bigger problem among us "straight" community than it is among gays...and lesbians are completely risk free!

@John albay: I agree with your comment. What they do in private is their business but the Army is no place for them. And someone mentioned Australia and America not having this rule however, they have bigger issues with sexual abuse, harassment, etc on their plates. There's even a story on HDN about the Australian Defense Force at the moment. @Johanna Dew: Which billions of Euro's are u claiming are donated to Turkey by E.U? Please elaborate! E.U needs billions for their own failing economy

The worst unkindness anyone can do to another person is watch that person harming himself and sit idly by and encourage it. Thank God the government in Turkey is not watching self harm and encouraging it. What they have done is made it very clear that the behavior is unacceptable. To remove this sanction one only have to stop engaging in the unacceptable behavior. This society's standards are set by Allah so speaking of those standards in terms of intolerance is a criticism of Islam itself.

This is why Turkey is going backward its going towards destruction, Only CHP and BDP are arguing for the rights of LGBT community, Turkey and its stupid laws need to change if it wants to go become part of EU.
