An incorrect photo was used in a tourism booklet prepared by the Manisa Provincial Culture and Tourism Directorate due to a misunderstanding caused by the name similarity between Manisa’s Gördes district and the Gordes village in southeastern France.

Some 50,000 copies of the book, titled “Manisa, a brand city,” were distributed to many institutions and tourism companies in order to promote the tourist sites of the region.

Provincial Culture and Tourism director Erdinç Karaköse acknowledged the mistake, pinning the blame on the advertising agency which prepared the booklet for print.

“We did not mean to promote a French village. The four-square centimeter photo apparently went unnoticed despite several checks. This is because of the agency’s fault,” Karaköse said, adding that the directorate had launched an investigation into the incident.
