A French cyclist has been killed in an accident after being struck by a car in the southwestern province of Muğla.

Christian Jean Auguste Niaffe, 59, was struck at around 5 p.m. on May 24 while en route to the resort town of Marmaris in the Aegean region.

Niaffe had travelled in 40 countries with his bicycle as part of a trip and was planning to see 16 more countries, according to his private website, Doğan News Agency reported.

An unidentified driver hit Niaffe as they were both traveling in the same direction along a curve on the highway in the Taşhan area. Niaffe subsequently died at a Muğla hospital.

The driver was taken into custody by gendarmerie forces, while an investigation has been opened into the incident.
