The European Committee for the Prevention of Torture arrived on İmralı island today to examine the prison conditions of outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan, who is serving a life sentence at the facility, daily Hürriyet has reported.

The committee had previously informed the Bursa Public Prosecutors’ Office about the visit.

The European Committee for the Prevention of Torture is a branch of Council of Europe which monitors the situation in prisons regarding the treatment of inmates and aims to expose cases of torture and degrading treatment by launching surprise visits.
