Eroğlu: No more from Turkish Cypriots

LEFKOSA - Anadolu Agency
Turkish Cypriots have already fulfilled their responsibility for a solution and nobody should ask for more, Turkish Cypriot President Derviş Eroğlu said. Speaking at the traditional Pier Festival’s opening ceremony in Lefkosa yesterday, Eroğlu said Greek Cypriots would be more pro-agreement at the negotiating table if “inhumane” embargoes imposed on Turkish Cypriots were removed and the United Nations (UN) reviewed its decision not to recognize Turkish Cyprus.

As Turkish Cypriots have already fulfilled their responsibility for a solution, nobody should ask for more, the president said.

The UN’s recognition of Greek Cyprus as the continuation of the Republic of Cyprus and the European Union’s (EU) unilaterally accepting it as a member were important causes of the stalemate, he said.

“Their duty is to warn Greek Cypriots instead of us,” said Eroğlu. “We will keep on working for a sustainable and viable peace agreement on the island.”
