Turkey’s daily electricity consumption hit a new record yesterday, as air conditioner usage in the country has increased due to hot weather and industrial production has gathered pace.

Some 752.7 million kilowatts of electricity were used, which is the highest daily consumption since 1923, when the Turkish Republic was founded, according to data issued by the Ministry of Energy. The peak hours in power consumption were between 12:00 and 3 p.m.

The daily electricity consumption hit 744 million kilowatts the previous day, setting the first record.

A temperature increase of one degree Celsius causes a 2,000 megawatt increase in energy consumption per day in Turkey, 500 megawatts of which is claimed by Istanbul alone, according to ministry officials. The installed power capacity is adequate to meet the rising consumption, the officials said.
