Diyarbakır police chief denies claims that officer sexually abused three minors

DİYARBAKIR – Doğan News Agency
The Diyarbakır Police Department has refuted claims circulating on social media that a police chief in the city sexually abused three minors.

The prosecution against a police chief who is accused of having sexually abused three children, aged 3, 5 and 7 has been allegedly dismissed by a Diyarbakır court, causing uproar among social media users.
The police have launched an investigation following the reactions, as the post was shared on social media platforms several times.

Halis Böğürcü, head of the police department, denied the claim, saying the person who first uploaded the information on the web has been determined. The suspect, M.E., is psychologically challenged and was previously charged with slandering public officers, Böğürcü said.

The accused mentioned in the claim is not working at the police department, he added.

M.E. has reportedly received terms in jail for offenses including slandering, insulting and threatening others; however, the court suspended his sentences.

Similar claims of police officers in the city sexually abusing minors in the past have prompted the Diyarbakır Governor’s Office to release a statement on the subject.

The investigation into the police officer accused of sexually abusing the minors was dismissed, the officer said, while he filed a lawsuit against the suspect on charges of slandering.

An investigation launched by the Diyarbakır Public Prosecutors’ Office into the suspect, on the charges of fabricating a crime, is still ongoing.
