Deputy PM takes action on draft law

ISTANBUL - Hürriyet Daily News
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan has announced yesterday a new regulation regarding a change in the terms of office for public authority heads and members after it appeared that he was unaware of a draft law was prepared on the issue.

Public authorities will be limited to two terms in office of five years each, Babacan said.

The draft law, signed by Nurettin Canikli, the group deputy chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), authorizes the government to extend the terms of office of the heads of the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund and the Turkish Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency, according to daily Radikal.

Babacan had told the press the previous day he was not aware of the draft law.

Babacan said he and Prime Minister R. T. Erdoğan had decided to reduce the current term of office from six to five years and limit it to two terms.

A new draft is to be prepared at the Prime Ministry, he said.
