Turkey’s energy minister said Wednesday that the country and Japan could soon reach an agreement over the construction of a nuclear power plant.

Taner Yıldız said delegations from Turkey and Japan were engaged in "intense" negotiations over the terms of a possible deal to build Turkey's second nuclear reactor.

Turkey has already reached an agreement with Russia over the construction of its first reactor, to be located near the Mediterranean coast. The second power plant is slated for construction in Sinop on the Black Sea coast.

Yildiz said studies were also ongoing to locate a site for a third nuclear power station.
