An Istanbul court has halted a zoning plan that would have allowed a mosque to be erected at Istanbul’s Taksim Square, CNNTurk reported Wednesday.

An Istanbul court has halted a zoning plan that would have allowed a mosque to be erected at Istanbul’s Taksim Square, CNNTurk reported Wednesday.

The court ended the case filed by the City Planners’ Chamber and halted the zoning plan of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. In its court application, the chamber has argued the mosque construction would be against the universal plans of protection zones and the zoning regulations.

The chamber made a written statement to announce the court decision. “The decision is an important one taken by the judiciary in the names of the Beyoğlu Urban Protection Zone and Taksim Republic Square.”

The statement also said the chamber expects the “political symbol disputes over Taksim Square” to be finished with by this decision. A mosque to be built at Taksim Square has been a symbolic goal for conservatives and Islamist politicians for many years.
