Court rules against TeliaSonera

ISTANBUL
A commercial court in Istanbul has declined a case presented by Sonera Holding against Turkcell Chairman Colin J. Williams claiming that he was not impartial, according to a company filing made to the Istanbul Stock Exchange yesterday.

The court case was presented on March 30, according to the filing. Williams is also one of the independent members of the board of Turkcell.

TeliaSonera, based in Stockholm, Sweden, has been waging efforts to take hold of the helm of Turkcell, Turkey’s largest mobile operator, acting together with Alfa, the Russian partner of the company. The court ruling constitutes a major setback for TeliaSonera’s ambition to exert its influence on the management of the company, according to industry analysts.
