Concert to bring east coast jazz to Istanbul

ISTANBUL - Hürriyet Daily News
Kurt Elling, one of the world’s foremost jazz vocalists, and Istanbul Superband, one of the most prominent Big Bands of Turkey, will take the stage at İş Sanat on March 14.

Named “Male Singer of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association on six occasions over the past ten years, and proclaimed by The New York Times as “[the] standout male vocalist of our time,” Elling is more like a virtuoso jazz instrumentalist than a vocalist with his command of rhythm, texture, phrasing and dynamics.

Every record he has made has also been Grammy-nominated. Elling’s rich baritone spans four octaves and features both astonishing technical mastery and emotional depth. His repertoire includes original compositions and modern interpretations of classics, all of which become springboards for inspired improvisation, scatting, spoken word, and poetry.

He will be accompanied by Istanbul Superband, which was founded and is conducted by Aycan Teztel, who has previously played with world legend Randy Brecker. Istanbul Superband is an ensemble that blends traditional Big Band music with contemporary sounds.
