Christofias shows ‘he is not sincere on Cyprus’

NICOSIA - Anatolia News Agency
Turkish Cypriot President Derviş Eroğlu said the decision by his Greek Cypriot counterpart Demetris Christofias not to seek re-election reveals the fact that he is not sincere about solving the Cyprus issue and that Greek Cypriots do not seek a solution.

The decision to not seek re-election belongs to Christofias and his party, Eroğlu said, adding that he would soon offer a detailed assessment of the president’s address. “In his statement Christofias said he would not seek re-election next year, citing lack of progress towards the island’s reunification. These words reflect that Greek Cypriot society does not want a solution and he is not sincere on the solution,” Eroğlu said.

Elected in 2008, Christofias is lagging in opinion polls due to a faltering economy and unpopular concessions in peace talks. The presidential election is due in February 2013.
