Şafak Pavey, a deputy from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), has become a member of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Anatolia news agency reported today.

Pavey, the first woman with disabilities to be elected to the Turkish Parliament, also became the first Turkish parliamentarian to be appointed to the U.N. body.

The deputy said she was so happy to be a part of a journey that works for bringing humans to a better future.

The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is a U.N. body that monitors implementation of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Pavey recently received the 2012 International Brave Women award from the U.S Department of State.
