The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) is set to raise the issue of the Syrian crisis in the upcoming Socialist International’s (SI) general assembly in Cape Town, South Africa.

Deputy Chairmen Umut Oran will travel to the South African city for the congress, which is scheduled to be held between Aug. 29 and Sept. 1. The congress, which takes place every four years, brings together government heads, leaders and delegates from the member parties of the SI alongside invited guests. Oran said the party will raise the Syria issue in the meeting.

“We are expecting to be chosen to lead the vice presidency in this congress and we realize that there is growing support for our party across the international community,” Oran said.

CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has officially petitioned to become a vice president of the Socialist International last month. “We will work with great effort after Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has been chosen as a vice president. In the upcoming term the CHP will work for peace and stability in the region,” Oran said.
