CHP acts on Gül’s term

ANKARA - Hürriyet Daily News
The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) applied to the Constitutional Court yesterday for the cancelation of a controversial law that fixed President Abdullah Gül’s term at seven years.

The CHP’s application asked for the annulment of six articles of the law for being “unconstitutional,” said the party’s deputy group chair Emine Ülker Tarhan.

The law, passed by Parliament on Jan. 19, has come under fire for being tailor-made to suit Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s widely-expected move to ascend to the presidency after Gül completes his tenure in 2014.
