Children in an elementary school in the northwestern province of Bursa have staged a play reenacting the July 15 failed coup attempt, believed to have been masterminded by the followers of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen.

The play was staged at Orhanbey Elementary School in the Osmangazi district of the province, Doğan News Agency reported on Sept. 19.

Activities regarding the failed seizure of government were carried out in schools around Turkey upon the instructions of the Education Ministry.

Some of the students in the school dressed as coup plotting soldiers and some acted as the citizens who took to the streets to stop the putschists. The latter group of students carried Turkish flags in their hands.

“The traitors wanted to steal the future of our children. However, with the stance of the people, they couldn’t reach their treacherous aims,” the school’s principal, Hilmi Sevim, told the students, their parents and teachers.

The students then attended their classes.
