The Sevserek Han is one of the caravansaries on Malatya-Nemrut highway.

Eight caravansaries located along the historic Silk Road and dating from the Seljuk period have been taken under protection, are undergoing a restoration process and will be opened to visitors.

The eight caravansaries are on the Malatya-Nemrut highway, along the historic route of the Silk Road, Malatya Mayor Ulvi Saran said. Work is being carried out to open the caravansaries, take them under protection and open them to Turkish and foreign tourists.

“The first caravanserai discovered during our excavations was the Sevserek Han, which was mostly underground in the Yaygın district,” Saran said. “Our purpose is not to bring it back to its original structure. We want to preserve it in its current state and enable tourists to visit it. It is a different approach in architectural restoration to preserve largely ruined historic structures as they are and open them to visitors in a glass shelter or under a roof. We are adopting this approach for the caravansaries on the Malatya-Nemrut highway,” he said.
