EU Minister Egemen Bağış has called on the Greek Cypriot administration to give a clear reaction on a reported incident of desecration of the Turkish flag, as he also suggested that this action could be part of a campaign by extremists against the newly elected Greek Cypriot leader, Nicos Anastasiades, who is known for his conciliatory attitude on the Cyprus issue.

“Of course, burning the flag is not their place. We expect the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus to give a very clear reaction to those who burned the flag,” Bağış told reporters March 29 in response to questions about a report that said Greek Cypriots had burned a Turkish flag waved by a person holding French passport among a crowd lined up outside of banks in bailed-out Greek Cyprus.

Bağış indicated that protection of the Turkish flag’s honor must be an issue also for Greek Cypriots since Turkish Cypriots have been providing them with electricity and water when needed. “But I particularly consider this an effort by deep centers that want to put Anastasiades in a difficult position,” he said, noting how Anastasiades had supported a U.N.-led 2004 reunification plan for the island. Bağış also lent support to Economy Minister Zafer Çağlayan, who recently urged the European Union to restructure the terms of the current Customs Union, or cancel the Customs Union altogether and make a separate free trade deal with Turkey.

MR BAGIS Once again such an embarrassment on the World stage for Turkey. Yeah, VARGEN I don't recall anyone being upset at the burning of American flags in Turkey, when that idiot decided to burn Qurans in Florida, and that was just one man.

Let us say it as it is, these are the people who want to unite with Turkish Cypriots? How dare they?

The usual inflammatory and capitalizing rhetoric sourced by Mr. Bagis. Who could expect anything less from him? Thankfully, he represents Turkey on the international stage. How many Israeli flags did Turks burn since 2010? Display a republic of Cyprus flag amongst frustrated Turks and see what happens... Regards

i agree with mr. Bağış.Also i still cant figure out why a french citizen would unfurl a Turkish flag. it sounds a bit weird. i suppose it could be a premediated action by the greek cypriot extremists. we already know Turkophobia is on the increase with the economic crisis.but greek cypriots should respect the turkish flag and know how to get along with turks. they will need us sooner or later..

A lot of wishfull thinking...but GCs mentality will never change. What went wrong in Cyprus? Cyprus's negotiations with the EU and IMF have provoked anger among G- Cypriots Absolutely no conspiracy here.Mr.Minister,in any (no) wise not a wise move from a French guy who seems to be a headless-chicken and Its all about the GC mentality acting accordingly and frustrated crowd ? just an angry woman had done over offend.

Oh Bagis, the wisest of the Great Leader's wise men! Yes, it is a conspiracy, a conspiracy by journalists paying for this stunt in order to increase the sale of their newspapers. It is generally known that journalists all over the world pay people to conduct fake demonstrations. Could it be that a Gülen/Erbakan AKP newspaper paid this time?

Is it considered to be a criminal act to burn a flag in Turkey? I can not recall that I have read about a single court case against someone who has burned for example american flags in Turkey. I suggest that those who are upset about this flag buring, burn a S Cyprus flag, and the flag burning society is even and equal and we can go back to solving real problems of importance for both S and N Cypriots.

The only conspiracy is Tayyip's and Fetos Gülen's attempt to frame Turkish generals and destroy secularism.
