Britain’s defense ministry says a soldier from 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards has been killed in southern Afghanistan.

The ministry says the soldier, who has not yet been named, died Friday as a result of enemy action while working in the Nahri Saraj district of Helmand province.

Maj. Ian Lawrence, the British military spokesman in Afghanistan, said Saturday that the soldier was killed while on sentry duty.

"The thoughts and prayers of everyone in the Task Force are with his family and friends at this very difficult time," Lawrence said.

The soldier’s family has been informed of his death.

His death brings to 425 the number of British military personnel to have died in Afghanistan since 2001.
