A bakery in the central Anatolian province of Eskişehir is rewarding environmentally friendly customers by selling its bread at a discount to those who bring in their own shopping bags.

Bakery owner Mehmet Akbal said he had been operating the bakery for 16 years and made an effort to develop social responsibility projects in his bakery. He said all his customers used to ask for plastic bags.
“Bad environmental effects of plastic bag waste have disturbed me because it takes dozens of years to biodegrade,” he said. “They are crude oil products, and we are dependent on foreign countries for crude oil. I felt guilty for nature and decided to initiate this project. The price of bread is 60 Turkish Kuruş. We sell it for 50 kuruş to those who bring their own bags.”

Akbal said customers have shown interest in the campaign. “Thanks to this project, there is a 30 to 40 percent decrease in plastic bag consumption,” he said.

“People ask us about our profit in this project. We don’t have a profit; we sell bread 10 kuruş cheaper. We are interested in the decrease of plastic bag use. Customers who bring their own bags make us happy. We give more importance to social responsibility projects.”
