Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan has declined to give information about claims that state-owned Halkbank paid the attorney fee of the bank’s former CEO, who is one of the key suspects of Dec. 17 corruption probe, citing banking secrets.

Answering a censure motion filed by main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy Mehmet Şeker, Babacan said information requested regarding details of Süleyman Aslan’s attorney fee came within the scope of bank secrets, as defined in the Turkish Banking Law.  

Babacan chose not to respond to the following questions: Have any decisions been taken by the Halkbank board for paying attorney fees since Dec. 17, 2013? If so, what are the dates and reasons of the decisions? When and how much has been paid as Aslan’s attorney fee? Will the payments made to Aslan’s lawyer for a lawsuit that is not related to the bank be recorded in the bank’s financial figures? How many individual lawsuits has Halkbank been a financer for?
