Animal rights activists in Istanbul are set to hold another demonstration on Oct. 21 in protest against the recent modifications to Law No. 5199 for the Protection of Animal Rights.

Animal lovers staged an immense demonstration on Istanbul’s İstiklal Street on Sept. 30, gathering thousands to stand up for animal rights.

Public demonstrations and activism let the way to the withdrawal of the modification draft prepared by the Environment and Forest Ministry, with lawmaker Ayşe Nur Bahçekapılı assigned to look into the draft to judge whether animal rights activists were justified in their protest.

The draft was severely criticized for leading the way to mass animal killings, as it foresees the deportation of strays to “natural parks” to be established on the outskirts of cities. The law also limits the number of animals to be owned by any one person, and takes the regulation on so-called “dangerous breeds” one step further by leading the way to the removal of certain dog breeds from their owners.

According to an announcement from one activist, Bahçekapılı will submit her analysis to the parliamentary commission for animal rights in the last week of October and the law draft will be further discussed with the participation of non-governmental organizations, rendering the Oct. 21 demonstration all the more crucial.

Humans must be the protectors of this planet. Unfortunately most abuse there birthrite and all the innocents suffer. Yes animals do have rights but mankind abuse them constantly. dogs have been mans best friend since the dawn of time. if there are any problems with a breed it is the fault of those who breed them and abuse them. İ have found that all those people who complain are generally the ones who propagate the problems.. And remember Dog is God spelled backwards,

BTW, I don't see whats so wrong with these laws, it's GREAT that people can't legally start hoarding cats and dogs ... and certain breeds of animals should be prohibited by law .. like most Husky's (Dog/Wolf mixes) the dogs are very unstable and usually more wild then domesticated. I LOVE wolfs, but they shouldn't be mixed with domesticated animals. And certain types of dogs are simply dangerous, esp without good care. Like Pitbul.

I am all for Animal welfare .. I support the protection and humane treatment of Animals ... but animal rights? HELL no, animals are not HUMAN, so stop putting our standards on them. I respect people who protest for animal welfare, I despise the ones who ask for animal rights. Because those are the same people who will often argue that animals are more important then humans, the delusional vegans spitting their propaganda everywhere ... Vegans promote their lifestyle as healthy, which it is NOT
